No, you don't need AV software.

If you are asking if it is necessary to use an anti-virus program in addition to the protections already present in OS X the answer is no. OS X already includes everything it needs to protect itself from viruses and malware. Keep it that way with software updates from Apple.
A much better question is "how should I protect my Mac":
Such products are very aggressively marketed. They are all scams.
Summary: Use common sense and caution when you use your Mac, just like you would in any social context. There is no product, utility, or magic talisman that can protect you from all the evils of mankind.
If you are sharing a lot of files with Windows users you may consider using ClamXav.

I'd agree with the other commenters here that Mac's generally don't need to be running AV software (provided the user uses some common sense on the internet), however if you are sending lots of emails to Windows users or moving Windows files around on disks you should probably make sure you are not a source of infection.
ClamXav is reasonably 'lightweight' - it doesn't overload the OS with many scanning jobs & it doesn't have many pointless utilities like other commercial AV solutions. Apple use a tailored version of ClamXav in OS X server to scan for email viruses/ malware.
