If you have an iPad 1, IOS 5.1.1 is the highest you can go.

You're welcome. I think you mean iTunes on a computer but unfortunately the answer is still no. The iPad 1 just doesn't have the processing power to run anything above IOS 5.1.1.

Aloha Zoeelena. You're welcome. I don't know if this is good news or bad, even if you had IOS 7.1.2 you couldn't install WhatsApp. WhatsApp is only available for the iPhone. Bob.

I've seen that article and read it's not going to work. I'd contact whatsapp and ask them to make a iPad version.

You're welcome. On the bright side in the article you cited at one point in the process you'll need an iPhone to make it work. If you have an iPhone you can install WhatsApp on it and don't have to worry about installing it on a iPad.
I préfère to write on an iPad it's bigger , so, it's easyer for me !
I much prefer the larger size too. Here's the link to WhatsApp. At the top right is "Contact Us." Let them know you would love to use there product if only it were available on an iPad. Who knows, maybe you'll get it.
