DVI sends a digital signal giving the numerical value for each dot on the screen. VGA sends an voltage that changes to the vaue for each dot from left to right of each line of the screen. VGA can cause slight merging of the values for adjacent dots, causing some blurring. DVI will give the sharpest picture.
Macs use DVI-I which has pins for digital and analog outputs. A DVI to VGA adapter takes the control signals and the analog video and connects to the pins of a VGA connector. If your display has both DVI and VGA, use the DVI for the best picture.
SVGA is not a connection type, but was used on PCs to specify 800 x 600 resolution.
