Since my ISP BT has dumped Yahoo and now uses "mail.btinternet.com" as both incoming and outgoing addresses, I can' send mail on my iMac. I can on my iPad and on my PPC G4 under 10.5.8. Connection Doctor on my iMac says both addresses are connected but Mail reports "Cannot send mail with Server "mail.btinternet.com". Help please.
Do your settings match those suggested by BT ?. Are they the same on your G4 ?.

Thank you Andy. The settings differ slightly: on the G4 Use SSL is untucked and the Port is 110. on the iMac Use SSL is ticked and the Port 993. Both of these differ from the BT Specification. Can you comment?
Now however I have got my mail out back by deleting the com.apple.mail.plist and allowed Mail to rebuild.. Only just thought to try that!
Sorry, could I ask for more help: Deleting the plist pref. worked in my iMac Snow Leopard partition, but when I move to the Mavericks partition, outgoing Mail still doesn't work but I can't find a mail.plist to delete. Where is it, if it exists, otherwise what should I do? Thank you.
The equivalent is the entire folder :
~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
or try using whatever settings are now working in Snow Leopard.
Thank you. I'll try that as soon as I can. It's not possible at present to enter the settings from Snow Leopard. Whatever I try, how many times I delete accounts and try to enter a BT account all I get is a Yahoo IMAP account, obviously a hangover from the Yahoo SMTP days. I thought I'd go into my Library and get rid of everything at all associated with Yahoo. I don't need Yahoo anyway. Will report back as soon as I can get to the iMac.

Thanks again. Deleting that file got me working. However the account still thinks it's a Yahoo account. I've been completely unsuccessful trying to terminate my whole Yahoo account. It didn't recognise me so I went through the rigmarole of changing my password. It still wouldn't let me in, but in the process it changed my BT password. A real nuisance as I now have to go through all my devices and mail accounts to change them. I wonder if anybody had been successful in terminating their Yahoo account. I don't think they want you to.
Have you tried deleting the account and manually setting it up again. After filling in the 1st screen, hold down the option/alt key and you should be able to manually enter the BT information.
