I used a template for pages and inserted my own pictures. I believe it is due to the pictures that the file is so big. Even as a PDF it is 24M! Is there a way to compress the pictures from within pages, or do i need to compress the pictures before adding them.

What quality are you exporting the PDF as?
Try using 'Better' or 'Good' to see if that makes it smaller than exporting as 'Best'.
You can also try File > Reduce File Size. That may make it smaller when exporting.
Save another version if you are worried about the image quality dropping too much - it seems to look OK to me after using reduce file size.
