Refurbished MacBook Pro 13" (Retina) & AppleCare Purchase

Hi Guys

Here is a tricky question I am stuck with.

I am about to purchase a refurbished MacBook Pro 13" with Retina display, directly from Apple US.

My worry is if I have to mandatorily buy AppleCare with the purchase or can I purchase the same at a later stage without any issues?

I am not in US at the moment, thus cannot contact sales support.

Any clarity will be very helpful.

Thanks in Advance.

MJ

You can purchase additional AppleCare as long as you are within your initial 1 year AppleCare warranty period. However, purchasing additional AppleCare at a later date won't make the AppleCare start/end on a later date. It will still end 3 years after your initial AppleCare ends.

The FAQ for refurbished products is a little ambiguous

"(3) Can I purchase the AppleCare Protection Plan for my Apple Certified Refurbished Product?

All Apple Certified Refurbished Products are covered by a one-year limited warranty. For extended coverage, you have the option of purchasing the AppleCare Protection Plan with your Apple Certified Refurbished Product. If it said "for your product" instead of "with your product" it would've been clearer.

Which is why I am concerned.

To my understanding, the refurbished FAQ implies that an AppleCare Protection Plan for a new Mac is the exact same thing as an AppleCare Protection Plan for a refurbished Mac. Therefore, the content here https://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/apple_certified.html should also apply to AppleCare Protection Plans for refurbished products.

The refurbished FAQ says For extended coverage, you have the option of purchasing the AppleCare Protection Plan with your Apple Certified Refurbished Product. So you have the option to purchase the additional AppleCare with the purchase of your Mac or you may buy it later, as well. It doesn't state "For extended coverage, you must purchase the AppleCare Protection Plan with your Apple Certified Refurbished Product."
