Iphoto is not recognizing RAW photos from the new Nikon D810

Is there an available upgrade?

Mac Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)

Yeah.

There will probably be D810 support eventually. Maybe even soon. But frankly, no self-respecting photographer should rely on Apple at this point.

Aperture supports my Df, but when I compare the image quality with Lightroom, it's no contest — Lightroom owns Aperture — particularly in the natural way Lightroom handles rolloff to bright or overexposed regions of photos, and in its ability to recover lost details. The results in Lightroom are natural and film-like, while in Aperture there's a harsh cutoff that screams digital. Here's an example:

User uploaded file

Lightroom on the left. Aperture on the right. I tried everything I could think of to restore detail to the bright regions in Aperture — Recovery, Highlights & Shadows, even Curves with extended data — and Aperture couldn't come close.

There's no denying that Aperture has the superior interface, and a more robust DAM, but it's a dead product. Development has ended.

Swing and a miss to Mike. Gorman and BigBopper. 🙂 I will agree 1000000000000000 bazillion % that the Nikon software is useless except for one thing that neither Adobe LR or Aperture has. Nikon owns the proprietary algorithm to decode RAW images. Nikon Capture NX-D is useless as a DAM and it does not integrate into anything but it is the best RAW converter engine out there for converting .NEF files. Adobe and Apple guestimate on the algorithm. For the most part, I use LR but if it is mission critical, I convert view NX-D, export as a .TIFF and then import into LR or PS for final editing.

Sorry but I do not understand completely. I usually import into Aperture, but now LR. The image is RAW until I export it to either .jpg, or TIFF or .PSD. Not sure what you mean when you say: "I want to edit it directly.". You are working on the RAW but to print it or mostly to do anything with it, you eventually convert it right? If you import the image, only Nikon Capture NX-D is the most accurate for taking the RAW from your camera and putting it on your computer.

Don, the point is that Aperture does not recognise NEF files but does JPEGs okay but I want to see the raw files and to edit said raw file in Aperture which is my preferred editor(sadly not for much longer), I'm not at all confident that "photos" will be able to replace Aperture when it comes to fruition!

Lightroom I find is not as user friendly as Aperture, the almost black interface is quite ugly! But has certain facilities that I was hoping Aperture would catch up with, obviously no more.

Apple seems bent on becoming to a mobile company instead of a mainstream computer company, all their efforts are leaning towards drifting OS X towards IOS, in my eyes not a good thing as it will eventually lead to the dumbing down of its desktop computers, it was with a sad heart I watched the latest WWDC, which lead me to believe that the writing is on the wall. Once upon a time it was good to boast about being an Apple Mac user, now I'll keep shtum instead!

Mike, I sooooo feel your pain about Aperture. I was an Aperture 1.0 user. I was more than disappointed when it was painfully obvious that Apple was abandoning Aperture. Anyway, LR is a disaster in the UI department. I hate it but the tools it offers is pretty good. As I mentioned early, you can convert to .DNG and then import directly into Aperture. Until Apple releases support for the D810, you are out of luck for native support. Currently this is your only option to import directly from the camera. I switched to LR about a year ago holding out the hope that Apple would not do what they did, but alas now we are stuck with a somewhat non-existent Photos app that does who knows what.

Don, I purchased Lr a while ago when it was on special offer(£30 off) and I'm running the two systems in parallel and you are right there is always a learning curve when using a new piece of software. Part of my trouble is that I'm not a fan of Adobe as a company, basically I think it stinks and of course is trying to force everybody to go down the renting route, not good.

Regards

Mike
