I used Google Maps last week to download maps of the Caribbean to my iPhone 6. I was on a cruise and did not have internet access.

It appeared that my position would only update when I had an internet connection.

Details:

I was able to open my previously stored maps, but the current position did not update e.g., the position icon showed Puerto Rico when I was off the coast of St. Martin. When I got into port at St. Martin and got a wireless connection, my position updated to the correct location. When we sailed for St. Thomas, my position still showed St. Martin.

The GPS itself does not require an internet connection.

You need a Maps App that can download the maps before hand, so they can be used without an internet connection.

I believe the Tom Tom App can do that.

The free Google Maps app can now download areas of interest in advance of needing them. This is not the same as the TomTom, which stores its entire map database on the phone (using several GB).

As I said, the Maps App needs an interent connection to download the Maps as it goes along. If it does not have one, it cannot continue to download the maps.

This is unrelated to the actual operation of the GPS.

Again you need a Maps App that can pre-download the maps.

I've never tried it with Google Maps but Lawrence sais it works so you can try it out.

Clearly the most convenient (and storage intensive) are full GPS apps like TomTom or Navigon. Google Maps added the feature recently; however, it requires that you plan ahead and download the area maps you are interested in. There are other apps that let you download map data such as OffMaps. You buy maps as you need them, or you can purchase an unlimited license. OffMaps is especially nice as it includes points of interest and Wkikpedia data are about the area you have chosen (I have no connection with the developer other than as a satisfied user)>
