Choose Force Quit from the Apple menu, select that application, and press the Force Quit button. If that doesn't work, save and close everything you can and use the Activity Monitor in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to force quit the loginwindow process.

the force quit worked fine with both methods. However, the calendar still locks up when I open. A panel appears with the iCal icon and a message
" The server responded with an error.
The request for Map data (c) 2014 Google
terms of use
Report a map error"
This is followed by a rail timetable I downloaded yesterday on Safari, when I also had Google Maps open.
the panel has no buttons at the top which would allow me to minimise or close, and it disappears of the bottom of the screen.
I can move the panel, but not change its size nor delete the data within
Help !!
basil,
Try these steps:
1. Disconnect your computer from your internet connection.
2. From the Menu, select Force Quit...>iCal.
3. Remove the com.apple.iCal.plist file from your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences Folder.
4. Then open the Calendars Folder in that Library Folder, and move any any files with "Cache" listed in the name field to your Desktop.
5. Next open the Preferences Folder in the same Library Folder, and move the com.apple.iCal.plist file to the Desktop.
6. Log out/in or restart, and open iCal.
