How do I factory reset without the disk

Hi I just bought a Macbook through a friend. I know it is not stolen it just has more than one previous owner. That being said I do not have the password for the Itunes and do not have the original CD. It is running 10.5.6 and I would like to clean the hard drive so that I can use it without any of the previous owners information be left behind on it. When trying to erase it from the disk utility the erase button is grayed out.

I am really not sure where I go from here.

You can’t. Phone Apple and order replacements, or if you don’t need iLife or the Apple Hardware Test, click here and buy the DVD.

so if i buy the mac os x snow leopard and put the cd in i should be able to factory reset it without the previous owners old password

Unless the computer has a firmware password set, yes. Note that while the Snow Leopard DVD can be used to create a complete and working system on its own, it won’t do a true factory restore.
