I'm trying to send four jpeg images that are 1152 x 864 (about 1.4 MG each) as attachments to an email. Doesn't matter if I check large or actual size, they arrive as tiny thumbnails. The receiver can't double click on them to make them larger.
If I send one jpeg it arrives OK in full size, but if I send two or more they arrive as the small thumbnails.

When the recipient saves the images, are they thumbnails? It sounds like the additional images are saved as an image file, but should expand to full size when saved.
You could put all the images in a folder and zip the folder.
Control-Click (Right-click) on a folder and select "Compress". This will create a .zip file.
Another option is to put on DropBox, OneDrive, Box.com, Google drive and send a link for them to download.
Note: Mail in Yosemite will include a feature to send large file. If the files are too big to send, it will send a link to download.
Check the size of your attachments in your Sent mail folder to verify that they are full sized. You may be accidentally sending thumbnail sized files.
Compressing jpegs won't reduce their size, they are already compressed to the max. So, if sending all four at once is a file size problem or limitation, zipping them won't help.
Email services often have max size limitations, it varies from provider to provider. It could be that you are over the max size for your recipient's email service.
The recipient isn't saving the images. They appear as small thumbnails when they open my email. Interestingly the images are not listed as attachments in Thunderbird, the recipient's email app. (There is a column in TB in the email window that shows if there is an attachment and that is not indicated for my email.)
But when I checked Sent in my Mail the jpeg's were each listed as attachments.

And that's with your sent mail that contains all 4 attachments?
That would be a total of 5.6 Megs, I would think that most email services could handle that, but if your recipient is getting the images one per email and not 4 per email, there may be some limitation.
What happens when you send 2 per email?

Is the recipient using Thunderbird on a Mac or a PC?
Mac. I've had this problem before, so this time I am sending these emails to two of my alternative email addresses. One gmail address I open with Thunderbird and the other address is at Yahoo.com that I open with Firefox.

I think you're right, it seems to be a Thunderbird issue. Others who said they just received thumbnails from me must have similar setting issues in their email client.

Also, dianeoforegon's suggestion of using something like DropBox is a good way to hedge the issue.
