songs not automatically added to iTunes

hi

am using latest versions of iTunes and Maverick. I have all my songs in iTunes on an external drive, and everything works fine. However, I just tried the "Automatically add songs" feature and it doesn't seem to be working. I placed a number of albums, all MP3 formats, in this folder, re-started iTunes but the songs do not get added to iTunes automatically as I thought they would.

any suggestions?

thanks

nick

Some things not clear to me.

1) Did you in fact move the folder at some stage and then put it back, whereby it may have been rendered inoperable by those moves, or did you never move it at all and it should work?

2) Can you add those mp3s to iTunes at all? They may be the problem, not the folder. Depending upon the source of the mp3s it may be you have some that iTunes doesn't like the looks of which is not at all unusual.

Did those files end up in a "Not Added" folder inside the "automatically add to" (AAT) folder? If they did, the AAT folder is likely working but iTunes doesn't like the files. If they just ended up in the AAT then maybe the folder isn't working (iTunes was running at the time wasn't it?)

On which drive were the files located when added? I don't have an AAT folder in my iTunes version but perhaps the files have to be on the same drive as the AAT folder?

hope this makes it more clear:

1. did not move and put it back, all I did is move it once from the hard drive to an external drive, which is something a lot of people do and can be done and all Apple tells you to do is to set the library location through the Preferences

2. I can add mp3 no problem, everything is working fine the only problem I can see is what I described in my original post

3. There is no "Not Added" folder, was not there in the original location on the hard drive, and is not in the new location

as I said before, everything is on the same drive now and same folder

I'm not becoming a fan of iTunes....
