The Safe Mac » Adware Removal Guide

Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection

An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.

Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.

See these Apple articles:

Mac OS X Snow Leopard and malware detection

OS X Lion- Protect your Mac from malware

OS X Mountain Lion- Protect your Mac from malware

OS X Mavericks- Protect your Mac from malware

About file quarantine in OS X

If you require anti-virus protection Thomas Reed recommends using ClamXAV. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for this recommendation.)

From user Joe Bailey comes this equally useful advice:

The facts are:

1. There is no anti-malware software that can detect 100% of the malware out there.

2. There is no anti-malware that can detect anything targeting the Mac because there

is no Mac malware in the wild, and therefore, no "signatures" to detect.

3. The very best way to prevent the most attacks is for you as the user to be aware that

the most successful malware attacks rely on very sophisticated social engineering

techniques preying on human avarice, ****, and fear.

4. Internet popups saying the FBI, NSA, Microsoft, your ISP has detected malware on

your computer is intended to entice you to install their malware thinking it is a

protection against malware.

5. Some of the anti-malware products on the market are worse than the malware

from which they purport to protect you.

6. Be cautious where you go on the internet.

7. Only download anything from sites you know are safe.

8. Avoid links you receive in email, always be suspicious even if you get something

you think is from a friend, but you were not expecting.

9. If there is any question in your mind, then assume it is malware.

Thomas Reed's site Safe Mac and Thomas himself have been a huge help to me with this kind of problem. I just came to the forums to figure out what this exact ad- or mal- ware was, downloaded the new AdMedic app from TR's site, and it found it and got rid of it right away. Just deleting it from the extensions in Chrome didn't work (which is something TR has told me to watch out for with past problems).

I really appreciate that we have someone out there who is working on these issues for us!!

This just happened to me. I was able to get rid of the issue by looking in my web browsers' (Safari and Firefox) plug-ins/extensions directory and removing the culprit. My browser seems to be working fine now.

It was installed in:

Safari > Preferences > Extensions

Firefox > Tools > Add-ons Manager > Extensions

Just "remove".

There's probably more to be removed. Might be an app in /Applications/ which will re-inatall the extensions if you run it. Also could be a macvx.dmg in you download folder. For safest, easiest removal of most all currently known adware, use AdMedic and to understand how it came to be installed and avoiding it in the future, read John Galt's How to install adware.

There might be additional files associated with this. If you use Firefox or Chrome, they will almost certainly also have that extension. You might still have the installer used to add these. The fastest, most effective way to identify and optionally remove all currently known adware is by using AdwareMedic, developed by thomas_r. this Forum's malware guru, owner of TheSafeMac and a colleague of mine.

To understand why this happened and how to avoid such things in the future read John Galt's How to install adware.

I downloaded the installer but don't know how to use it. Didn't see instructions.

It's not an installer. You double-click the "AdwareMedic.dmg" file in your Downloads folder and you will see the instructions in the window that opens. After it's in your Applications Folder, you double-click "AdwareMedic" and go from there.
