Dragging the downloaded firmware download to the SD card slot on the side of the monitor is not working. I think there is something that has to be "open" on the iMac menu (somewhere?) to allow that to happen?

I've never heard of an SD card needing a firmware update - can you be more specific: the brand of the card, the website prompting you for the download, etc.
I Have a iMac 27" with version 10.7. I bought a new Ricoh GR camera and the firmware (used to improve the camera performance) came with an older firmware installed in the camera. It's common for camera manufacturers to upgrade their camera's performance using firmware . I did it a couple of years ago with a fuji camera and it worked after getting support from this venue. The directions for the firmware upgrade are on their website. I follow the directions , download the file and attempt to drag it into the sd card slot on the side of the monitor and it does not load into the card.
Ahh yes, it's for the camera - I had a similar situation a couple of years ago and it did not work as their process was Windows-centric and would not work on a Mac. I did not update the camera firmware (and it worked just fine). I had another occasion for a DVD recorder (for TV) and finally talked them into sending me a CD with the update. You might want to contact the camera mfr and ask them about the compatibility of their firmware and process with Mac OS 10.7.
AAfter the firmware is loaded onto the sd card, you then reinstall the sd card into the camera and uplad the new firmware from there to the camera

The card probably has a write-lock switch, and it's in the locked position.

Can you copy any other files to that card, or to any card? Does the card work in the camera?
Attempting to download firmware update to a sd card in the sd slot. dragging the download to the card slot does not work. I think there has to be some kind of connection on the iMac that has to be opened to allow this?
