Gray screen on wake up (after overnight)

Every morning when I move the mouse on my iMac (which has been on all night, but has entered sleep mode) it wakes up to a grey screen. I can see my desktop behind the gray screen. Then a series of white bars on the bottom of the screen "fill" and eventually I get my login window. Then I have to wait another 30 seconds for the mouse and keyboard to work before I can actually login.

Here's a photo of the gray window.User uploaded file

(NOTE: I took a photo with my iPhone so the shimmering arced bars are just the effect of the monitor. The gray screen is a flat gray)

Something to try. First shutdown and restart, then sleep it for a few minutes then wake it up. Might by itself be the fix for something like this. If it doesn't help, then shutdown again and reboot in Safe Mode: Shift key down at the startup chime. Give it much longer than a regular boot. Will clear some caches. Then boot again normally and test.
