Would Samsung 850 Pro would work in a Macbook Pro Mid 2010??

Hi everyone,

I am thinking on replacing the HD (7200rpm) of my Macbook pro Mid 2010 (model 6.2) 2.66 GHz Core i7 with 8gb of RAM.

After researching a bit I got to the conclusion that the Samsung 840 pro is the SSD to go even thou my Macbook pro has Sata II

and the 840 pro is Sata III (Sata II compatible). I understand the limitations of the Sata II but still want to update it with a proper SSD.

But since Samsung has already released the new model 850 Pro with 3D V-NAND and both SSD are similar prices, my question is if I should go for the 850 instead and take advantage of the 3D V-NAND if there is any with the mid 2010 model. Has anyone already tested the 850 pro in the mid 2010 model or

similar one?? I am just worried that wont work on my model.

By the way I am running Mountain Lion 10.8.5.

Thanks in advance,

viersen

viersen,

I have a Samsung 840 PRO in my Mid 2010 MacBook Pro, and it works well. If you’d prefer the 850 PRO but have concerns about its functionality in your MacBook Pro, then purchase an 850 PRO from a company which has an acceptable return policy to you in case it doesn’t work well in your MacBook Pro.

Any Iuck with 850 evo?

I have the 850 Evo Sata 3 on the way and hope it works out for an upgrade on mid 2010 15" MBP i5 2.4 Sata 2.

Does anyone know if there is a way to convert a Sata 2 port to Sata 3? Maybe that would fry some stuff lolz? I know Sata 3 are supposed to be compatible with Sata 1,2 but hoping there is some hack or workaround to somehow get the 6gbps. Because better is better..

Thanks in advance!

OWC (macsales.com) and Crucial sell SSDs that have fewer issues. My 2 year old Crucial has run without issue in my 2011 MBP. Both companies do claim full mac compatibility. But some Samsungs have been reported to work without issue.

The system has its own limits for SATA speed. The drives can negotiate down in speed, but the computer has its design limits which cannot be exceeded.

I hadn't tried this SSD with TRIM enabled and hoped your experience would hold for me as well. It didn't. Install (on a USB adapter) crashed shortly after moving the SSD to the internal SATA connection. Seemed to be running okay (for an hour or so) until I applied a software update then everything went into the weeds again with a slow boot ending in an abrupt power-down. Oddly this time the disk seems fine when re-attached via USB; I couldn't find the typical lost+found directory full of trashed files. Different than my last experience but still not a path forward. Hope you're having better luck than I.

HI All, I realise this is a MBP post but have a 11.1 iMac late 2009 that i have upgraded the HD with a Samsung Pro 850 before i looked at doing my MBP.

I have had a few install issues with it taking several attempts as it would install from USB then hang in the boot screen with the startup line about 2/3rds across.

I managed to get a clean install ofEl Capitan installed and running for about a month very nicely then things started happening, for no reason the screen would freeze but the mouse would continue to move, this got progressively worse till it happened about 3 times a day then reboots would not work.

I found an article on KEXT files and the permissions in El Cap and noted my logitech control centre was one culprit and removed the KEXT to an unsupported folder and used Apple mouse and keyboards again BUT a day later the same issue.

I am wondering do Samsung 850's have issues with older Mac's or Mac's in general ? Tonight after 5 attempts i have managed to get a clean install of Yosemite back onto the system with the Samsung still installed to test and see if its an issue with El Cap and security Kext extensions and third party items not being supported, or if the SSD comes up with any errors.

Disk Utility and first aid did not find any errors on scans!

Hope this helps and any one who has other info i would be interested in hearing from, I may try Samsung about any possible firmware support ??

Cheers Tim

Thanks for the suggestion, but I had already replaced the internal SATA cable with no change in luck.

Yesterday I finally gave up on the Samsung 850 EVO and installed an ADATA SP550 instead. No issues at all with this drive, so either I have a bad 850 EVO (although it seems to work fine in other systems I have tried it in) or there is an incompatibility lurking within my vintage of MacBook Pro (MacBookPro7,1).

Getting on with my life now.

Would Samsung 850 Pro would work in a Macbook Pro Mid 2010??
