I have a subscription to Sports Illustrated's Digital Edition and have downloaded their app for it. The app works fine but I'd like to be able to get the icon into the Newstand icon. When I drag it in and new icon is created that has both Newstand and SI in it. I already have the Wall Street Journal and Business Week Magazine in my Newstand so I'd like to add SI. I have an iPhone with iOS 7.1.2.

Try to download the app again. You cannot "add" apps to newsstand. They are either placed there when you download them, or not. I just downloaded it recently and it was placed in Newstand. As you are using an old iOS version, there could be incompatibility issues with the latest version of the SI app.
I tapped Newstand and then Store and then the SI app. It downloaded, I logged in (my print subscription gives me the digital edition also) but eht icon appeared on the iPhone screen not in Newstand.
Then the app is not meant to reside inside the Newsstand and you'll have to place it in the screen of your choosing, maybe alongside the Newsstand's icon. Like Felipe states, they either go or they don't. The Newsstand is just a custom folder with controlled access, nothing more.
But Felipe said he downloaded it and it went into Newstand. Am I missing something? Maybe this next question should be directed to SI but are there perhaps more than one SI app?

It went into Newstand in iOS7. Since (I assume) you are using iOS 5, there could be incompatibility problems.
Ah, yes, especially since the app will be of recent vintage and maybe not amenable to how things were done in the distant iOS5 days.
I have NatGeo and it resides happily in Newsstand. iOS 7.1.2 here, on an iPad4
