Frustrated Newb. Redirecting Domain names from other host-to mac

Ya know, Nothing ever works when you want it to NOW.

I have went to BOTH of my different host and tried to re-direct my domain names to my mac Iweb site. Both host will redirect for free and tout being simple. *****!

You can't just put in the
http://web.mac.com/dottonedan/iWeb/DOTTONEDESIGNS/MAIN%20PAGE.htm

I need those "two" special numbers ( ns1.xxxxxxx.com ) & ( ns2.xxxxxxx.com ) That the mac account is supposed to have. Not jsut the web address, but the actual numbers. I can't seem to find anywhere. When I do the research, it leads me to creating my own DNS. I don't want to create a SERVER. I just simply want to have that flipp'n' little number to put in my spot at the HOST sites. Sheeesh! How simple can that be? Guess not all that simple. Can't find it anywhere. I'm hoping someone who's "IN THE KNOW" will come by real fast and put me in my place. Tell me I'm wrong and show me where. Show me how stupid I am and how simple it is. Can't wait!!!! I'll try to see to it tha tyou get one of those little stars er whatever it is for Good behavior. HEEEEEEEELP!

Mini, Mac OS X (10.4.4), Frustrated Newb using Iweb help.

Well, thats not very helpful. Fast reply but no content. No. Ok,

Why? How then? Whats next? I'm waiting on my HOSTWAY and my GKG.net to reply. Nothing. At least you replied with nothing FAST. 🙂

SORRY. BEING AN ARSE. 😟 Trying to get answers before my wife walks in the office and see's that I've not been getting any work done cause I'm farting around trying to get a coiuple web site names redirected to this Iweb address that I've spent 100.00 on and had for 3 months and nobody's beenair. Had the DN's for a year and not used them. IT'S TIME!

Still looking for an answer. Mac help is not all that helpful either (thus far). No answers.

Dottonedan...

I hear your frustration. This stuff can be pretty tricky if you've never done this before...

First of all...who do you have your domain name registered through? It sounds like they require you to put your own domain nameservers in order to allow the forwarding, right? This is not common, but some barebones domain registrars do this unfortunately (especially the ones that offer "free" domains and ad supported domain forwarding). Also unfortunate is that Apple won't let you use their nameservers.

Here is a list of public DNS servers that you might find helpful.... The Public DNS Service

In regards to what to enter for the actual domain forwarding, I would suggest that you only enter your short iWeb URL so that future changes to your website start pages do not break the forwarding. So all you have to enter is: http://web.mac.com/dottonedan/iWeb/ That should be enough and should always be forwarded to whatever start page you have designated in iWeb.

Good luck. Let me know if you run into any roadblocks. I'm happy to help out.

Ok. Thanks!!!!!! Now, I understand a bit more. I don't understand why, but I'm sure it's part of the Security protection process. Good link also. Thanks!

I ahve 4 DN's through HOSTWAY.com the othe ris GKG.net

What I don't see clearly now, is how the link you gave me will help in my situation since MAC won't let me point to it using the DN numbers. How can I use that link/Co as a middle person or link between HOSTWAY and Mac?

Unfortunate is that Apple won't let you use their nameservers? Ok. So I've seen this done before on another guys .mac site. HOW? Sorry. Take your time.

Thanks
DAN

My point is, you don't know that person has the DNS servers for .Mac. My url forwards to my .Mac too, but not the way you are suggesting.

You will either have to create DNS through a third party, which you said you don't want to do, or get a domain provider that allows straight up "domain forwarding" since .Mac will not tell us users the DNS server #s

From hostway's customer support pages (no DNS needed):

Domain forwarding

Domain name forwarding enables you to point your domain name to an existing Web site. When people type your domain name in their browsers, they will automatically be forwarded to the domain you specify. You can set up domain forwarding or one of either a Business Card Parking Page or Instant Site.

To forward your domain:

1. In SiteControl, click Domain Name.

2. On the Domain Name Management page, click Setup Domain Forwarding.

3. Enter the URL to the Web site you want your domain forwarded to and the click Add Domain
Forwarding.

Well, thats not very helpful. Fast reply but no
content. No. Ok,

The content of the post was, "USE DOMAIN FORWARDING." This is what you need to do.

Why? How then? Whats next?

From Hostway:

Domain forwarding
Domain name forwarding enables you to point your domain name to an existing Web site. When people type your domain name in their browsers, they will automatically be forwarded to the domain you specify. You can set up domain forwarding or one of either a Business Card Parking Page or Instant Site.
To forward your domain:

2. On the Domain Name Management page, click Setup Domain Forwarding.
3. Enter the URL to the Web site you want your domain forwarded to and the click Add Domain
Forwarding.

From GKG.net:

What is domain parking?
By selecting to park a domain with GKG, we will automatically provide DNS entries for your domain (this means GKG will answer for the domain name). GKG provides two parking packages during the registration process:
1) Deluxe Parking allows you to register a domain and the ability to administer some additional services such as:
URL Forwarding (domain forwarding) or Coming Soon Page
POP3 email account with 5MB mail spool
Up to 9 specific email aliases
Wildcard email alias (catchall)

The url to forward to is http://web.mac.com/yourusername/iWeb/nameofsite

I'm waiting on my
HOSTWAY and my GKG.net to reply. Nothing. At least
you replied with nothing FAST. 🙂

No, I replied with something. Hope you re-read it and get it sorted out. Good luck.

Well, I must say…I like your fortatude.

Thanks for following up. I admire that. I wish it was all that simple. The thing is, I did that (exactly as shown above) and is why I'm here. It wouldn't let me do it. It kept saying I had some kind of Error. Syntax error or some tech name. Probably not exactly Syntax error so don't quote me. But it wouldn't let me do it by just pasting in the web address. Both of thme did the same thing. The other thing is, I've re-directed those same names to another dns numer with no issues (cause I used the numbers). I may be off. Maybe it's kjsut that I pasted in and didn't include something. Hope so.

I just figure …WHY, I do I gotta go through loggin in to the Free DNS sites (AFTER) I paid and even re-signed for another year for all my DNS' on both those sites just so's I can re-direct the names in short, to the mac account? Why can't it just be as flipp'n' easy as it sounds.

Thats not good customer service if you ask me and I'm surprised that MAC would be working so low tech. Am I being a NEWB idiot and can't see the technical forest through the tree's? Maybe it's obvious to you-all but I'm missing the great service connection here.

Did you include the http:// at the beginning?

Have you published your iWeb site?

It is... you must be making an error somewhere. This is a problem with your domain registry services, NOT .Mac

It's poor customer service from your domain registries. .Mac can't provide customer service or FAQ directions for every domain registry out there. They provide customer service for their products.

I'm with the other folks here in this thread and I don't think you need the DNS addresses. Just like you said, this should be included by default with your domain name registration. It is rare that you would need to enter your own DNS information for simple domain name forwarding.

In terms of syntax errors that you are getting, go back to your domain forwarding setup and enter in ONLY your short iWeb URL: http://web.mac.com/dottonedan/ Don't enter in all that other garbage after this. Just try it.

Ok. I'm hering what your saying. 🙂 Again, Darned Newbs 😟

Learning though. Thats when one learns to swim the fastest. When they are starting to drown. LOL.

That last guy above had waht looks like some good info. To use somthing similar to what my friend Vanhoozer had in his VIEW, VIEW SOURCE.

After I try your method again, if it's still a NO GO, I'll try the guys method above. IF doing that (above), What protion do I copy and sue as a template? Not all right? Just maybe the
</NOFRAMES>
</HTML>

?

Your all very patient. Even after I had a tude. Shows you character! 🙂
