I've figured out that 10.10 is the main source (if not the only source) of crashes. I have 4 10.10 users and when I block them with a firewall the crashes stop.

Does anyone have 10.10 and OS X Server 4.0? I'm wondering if the problem happens there as well. I'm also curious what version of dovecot it comes with. OS X Server 3.2.2 is dovecot 2.2.5. You can find the version by opening Terminal and typing `dovecotd --version`.

I'm glad to know that iOS 8.x isn't causing the crashes, that was on my list of things to test.

Regarding the 10.10 Mail.app clients, you can work around the constant auth issues by turning off the client's "Automatically detect and maintain account settings" (Mail slow authenticating to Yosemite server). This also works around several performance issues at the client-end.

This setting seems to rotate the authentication method used, but doesn't seem to stick with the one that works once it finds it. Presumably one of the methods it attempts irritates auth.

I currently allow CRAM-MD5, so this might be the issue server-side for me as well.

Using information from that other thread (Mail slow authenticating to Yosemite server), I can confirm that unchecking "Automatically detect and maintain account settings" on the 10.10 clients stops the crashes. Also, unchecking "Digest-MD5" in the Server app, Mail->Authentication also stops the crashes. So it it appears that it is a combination of 10.10 checking Digest-MD5 passwords that is crashing the auth process.

Ah, yes, I misread that. CRAM-MD5 seems to work just fine.

I think you're correct about DIGEST-MD5 being Yosemite Mail's specific issue. Looking at /Library/Logs/Mail/mail-info.log, I see frequent "Aborted login" messages referencing method="DIGEST-MD5" and corresponding to my 10.10 users' login attempts prior to the client workaround.

Hopefully it's pretty safe to turn off at this point, considering there's no indication that anyone's used it successfully for IMAP since my 10.9 server rollout, and it doesn't seem very popular among mail clients.

Disabling DIGEST-MD5 does clear up the server-side Yosemite Mail.app auth failures for me, although it's still slower than locking Mail.app into one auth method.

More interestingly and on-topic, dovecot/auth hasn't segfaulted on me once since I made this change. There's an... eerie silence in my console.

If I turn DIGEST-MD5 back on, every Outlook IMAP fetch causes a segfault. If I turn it off again, no segfault.

Same issues here with Mavericks Server. I stopped the auth crashes by disabling all authentication methods except CRAM-MD5 as someone suggested earlier, but that caused issues with multiple clients (primarily Outlook, but a few others that were using plaintext-over-SSL). I went back and reenabled everything but Digest-MD5, and so far auth is still happy. Outlook clients obviously don't work properly with Apple's Digest-MD5 implementation, so that needs to stay off. Perhaps the auth instability has something to do with the order of the authentication entries in postfix's main.cf and/or dovecot's 10-auth.conf.

For the record, here are the lines in the two files as they appear on my server now, with auth (so far) not crashing. If anyone has time to test these options in different orders, I'm sure we'd all love to know the results:

(in /Library/Server/Mail/Config/postfix/main.cf)

smtpd_pw_server_security_options = cram-md5,gssapi,login,plain

(in /Library/Server/Mail/Config/dovecot/conf.d/10-auth.conf)

auth_mechanisms = cram-md5 apop gssapi plain login

Thanks. I've been experiencing the crashes with Mavericks Server + Yosemite Mail client. Disabling digest-MD5 has stopped them.

I've also turned off "Automatically detect and maintain account settings" as suggested by glen.circle, which I'm hoping will stop repeated auth failures (CRAM-MD5) from Yosemite clients by getting them to stick to "password". These auth failures could be problematic, I think, as the Adaptive Firewall (emond/afctl) is blocking the clients for 15 minutes each time (as it should).

So now I'm sitting here tailing /Library/Logs/Mail/mail-err.log and hoping the auth failures go away & /var/db/af/blacklist stays empty.

Another data point: shutting off CRAM-MD5 on the server wasn't a central a factor with the local auth daemon crashes — that's been disabled for weeks on a test server that's showing this with a newly-arrived mail client — it's disabling the setting in the OS X 10.10 (10.10.4, in this case) Mail.app mail client that senses the settings that got auth to not crash.

The test server is running Server.app 3.2.2 (13S5187) on OS X 10.9.5

ps: Remember to disable that setting for each mail server account, if you have more than one configured for the server within a particular client.
