External hardrive problems

Hey there!

So I just brought the SONNICS external hard drive with 999GB of memory.

I have a Macbook OS X version 10.6.8 - It has finally run out of space which is why I bought the external drive.

I have plugged in the SONNICS and have followed instructions to format it so it can work with my mac.

What I want is to export my 20,000 photos in iphoto to the hard drive,

Now my problem is when i try to transfer my photos- they are getting scrambled....its not just that the events are being split up, but they are all being mixed into one another...i have tried the "arrange by..." button to at least get them together in events and then I could manually create folders, but its one big mess and I cant even see if I have imported all folders or not.

Is there anyway to to keep my photos in their events folders???

Any help is much appreciated.

Old Toad has different export plug-ins installed. You will see the "subfolder" option, when you select more than one photo, before you are using the command "File > Export". If you only select one photo, the subfolder option will be missing.

I did select all events by highlighting them then going- file export and the pop up above is the one I get with no subfolder option.....

You don't have that subfolder option because you're running a version of iPhoto earlier than iPhoto 9 (11). You'll have to create a new folder for each event on the Desktop and export one event at a time. The drag the folder to the EHD.

If you want the edited version for those photos you've edited then select Kind = Current.

All phtotos are now in nice little neat folders on my EHD- this is an actual file and not just a shortcut right? (i moved them by dragging and dropping)

Because now to free up space on my mac I would like to delete the photos from my iphoto library on my macbook

Is this all okay? (its a daunty thought thinking to loose 20,000 pictures)

Then you've only got the preview of the photos - a medium quality version likely missing metadata. You'll do better to export them using the export command.

I used the export command to get them from iphoto to my desktop- but then from my desktop to the EHD i just dragged the folders....

still wrong? :/

That is fine, as long as you exported the versions using the export command and picked a high output quality.
