Logic Pro X Hanging Notes with Motu Express 128

Hi,

I have Logic Pro X 10.0.7. with Mac OS X10.9.4 @ GHz Intel Core 7 8GB Ram, Mac Book Pro, MOTU Midi Express 128 and various hardware synths.

The Motu arrived yesterday and all the installationseemed to go ok - and MOTO confirm this from looking at the system file. But having set it up in Logic Pro I find that after a few notes playing notes seem to hang and stay on - as though no MIDI off note was sent. This is worse if I send MIDI clock out to my synths. I have no idea why this is so. I'm wondering if there is something that i am missing in setting up MIDI in Logic. I am setting my Outputs and channels appropriately - so instruments are only communicating direct with Logic - no daisy chaining. If I turn everything off except one instrument I get the same problem.

Please HELP!!!!

I'll try anything - and if you need more information to help please ask!!

David

no worries.. & thank you

1. I'm having a look at the event list but i don't really know what I'm looking for, it doesn't appear as though i have duplicate notes (when i move a note in piano roll there is no underlying note).

2. at the moment i don't have any other midi cables i can try but i will definitely purchase a new one and see if that has anything to do with it

You are more than welcome...

Just look for anything that isn't a single note or something either than a Midi CC you have used like pitchbend/modwheel/sustain etc...

I actually dont think it will be a midi cable issue so i wouldn't wish you to waste money... but it is one very slight possibility to rule out...hence my suggestion if you had another laying around or you could borrow one...

To me, so far, it sounds like you may have a faulty Motu to be honest... or a flaky USB2 port on your Mac.... or a faulty USB2 cable even... or some kind iof very weird Motu driver bug that i haven't come across before with USB2 ports... or again, something else installed conflicting with the Motu driver.. but that last one would be pretty unusual now you have checked both Midi Driver folders and got rid of all that DiGi stuff....

Other than all that.. I guess you are waiting on an updated driver from Motu.... but again my gut tells me it may not fix your issue. as that update is to address issues when used with USB3 ports and Mavericks.... though it might have other fixes too that i am unaware of.

Cheers..

Yes, I understand that dilemma indeed..

Can you borrow one to test first?

Just don't buy one of the cheap USB2 midi cable types.... like look anything like this..

http://www.dx.com/p/usb-2-0-to-midi-converter-adapter-cable-178-5cm-length-11098 0#.VCTiTL576ik

They are all well known to possibly cause more problems than they resolve...

Anyhow.. I'm not sure there is much else i can offer to you here in terms of help so I'll wish you good luck and please, if you find a solution or the cause at some point in the future, let us know so i can add it to my 'list'

Thanks.....

Yes..

ill definitely keep an eye on this post to see if anyone comes up with a solution & also keep you posted if i find a solution (really hope i do)

i don't know where to borrow one from but I'm thinking of buying one of the iconnectivity ones the iConnectMIDI4+ to be exact as i read it solved the problem for someone in ableton... i know its a long shot.

anyway well have to wait and see..

I have two iConnectMidi2+'s and they work great with Mavericks and USB2 and USB3....

I use it mainly for its iPad Audio pass thru facility to record iPad Synth apps into Logic....but i do also use it as an additional Midi i/o alongside my Motu Ultralite (Firewire version via a FW to TBolt adaptor) built in Midi ports too...... and I have had zero issues at all.

I've been so pleased with them in fact, that I have a +4 on order to use "on the road"' later this year......

So, in my opinion... that would be a good buy indeed... though again, I havent tested the +4 yet.. only the +2s.....

Good luck!

Hi guys,

Is there any news from either MOTU or Apple?

Just upgraded my old 2008 imac tot a brand new 5k - Yosemite Pre-Installed - and upgraded my aging logic 8 to logic X. I'm soo happy with the system.

Except - my MIDI is screwed up. Guess what - hanging notes all over the place. I've got a serious investment in equipment here and it's not working as advertised. 😟

I'm using the MOTU XL Express - tried to put a powered Belkin USB 2.0 Hub between it and the iMac but to no avail. I'm using various pieces of hardware (Radias, An1x, TR-Rack, Nova, Machinedrum etc.) and all seem to be affected - across all midi-ports and channels. I am not sending anything crazy - just note data. When I actually tweak some CC's (filter cut-off) I also get lots of weird artefacts in the sound on my NOVA. I'm using a Novation 25SL MKII as a controller by the way.

p.s. I also noticed that though I can use the MOTU (and even the MOTU MIDI app to change routing etc.) but that the updater app from MOTU doesn't recognise it.

One quick thing...

When you tried using a powered hub.. did you make sure that the Motu was the only thing plugged into it?

Did you also shut down your Mac.. Unplug the Motu... Then plug in the hub and the Motu and then power the Mac back up again with everything already plugged in... You have to do it in that exact order for the hub trick to properly work...

Note: I have a client with an XL and using a powered hub as described above.. he has his XL working fine with the latest Motu drivers and 10.10.1 on a Rentina USB3'd MBP

Additional: Not all powered hubs are equal it seems... which is why you must make sure the Motu is the only device connected to the hub....
