Macintosh HD partition is not visible in Windows

Hello

I've a MacBook Pro mid 2012.

A week ago I had a problem with OSX 10.9 and the Apple Premium Reseller fixed it with a clean instal of OSX. I've set everything back with my Time-machine backup. Because it was a software problem, my windows partition wasn't damaged. In Finder I can see the BootCamp-partition and of course my Macintosh HD-partition. But when boot with windows I can only see the Windows BootCamp-partition but not he Macintosh HD-partition. And that's my problem. I want to see the Macintosh HD-partition in windows. Before the clean install I could see the Macintosh HD-partition and now I want it back because I need it.

I've downloaded the newest BootCamp software (Boot Camp Support Software 5.1.5621) and installed it. Because the HFS+ driver is included in the BootCamp software you should think it solved the problem but it doesn't. I've read many communities and they told about only to reinstal the HFS+ driver which was exluded from the BootCamp software but this also didn't work.

I also tried to give the Macintosh HD-partition a 'disc-letter' because maybe that should be the reason why I can't see the partition but I can't give the partition a letter. I did it this way: Run => type: diskmgmt.msc. But it's impossible to give it a letter. (See additional photo at the bottom) I only can delete the partition when I right-click on it. (Is it normal that my disc have so much partitions which I don't know?)

Can someone solve my problem please?

Thank you very much for helping me out!

Joachim

Hi Loner T. I've never installed an Operating system on my Thunderbolt HD. When I bought it, I've only used it for TM (and really only for this!).

Yes, disk1 is correct after removal of the USB. The 'Boot OS X' partition is created when a Core Storage Volume is created.

Would you have the ability to copy the TM backups (the Backups.backupdb and everything under it) to another drive, initialize the TB HD, and put the TM backups back on it, without encryption. Since you connect via TB, it is not same as a TC which is a network drive. I will also test with a USB/TB attached backup as a test.

Here is an example from my Mini with a Fusion drive. Notice the 'Boot OS X' partition on each physical disk. In a CoreStorage volume, if either disk is non-functional, the surviving disk can be used to boot the machine.

Are there no other folders on this drive? If this is the only folder (and you can expand it and see the machines that use this drive as a backup on the next level of directories and the sparse bundle files), then

1. Copy backups.backupdb and everything under it to another disk

2. Turn off this disk as a TM disk in TM Preferences by clicking on the 'Off' button or slide it to 'Off'.

3. Initialize this disk via Disk Utility using Mac OSX Extended Journaled

4. Put this directory and all it's contents back on the TB HD

5. In TM Preferences select this disk as a backup destination

6. Test a backup. This may take a bit of time, since the disk GUID would have changed and TM will verify the Backups.backupdb and it's contents.

Please post here if you have any errors or with your test results. Do not remove the copy you make in step 1, till you have a successful backup.

Hi Loner T

This is the only folder on my TB HD and I use this drive only for my MacBook Pro as backup:

User uploaded file

Thanks for your answer how I can initialize my TB HD as Mac OSX Extended Journaled. But I'm going to buy a desktop HD which I'm going to use for TM (Because the TB HD is a mobile drive). I'm going to initialize this new desktop drive as Mac OSX Extended Journaled and then I will follow step 1 to 6 as you told me in your previous message to set my TM backups on the new desktop drive. After that I will initialize my TB HD also again as Mac OSX Extended Journaled. Then everything should be fine with my TB HD isn't it? So I see it only once on the startup?

Can I reply later on in this topic when I have a trouble after i bought my new desktop drive?

Aug 13, 2014 6:19 AM in response to Joachim1207

Based on this, it looks like this was TM disk. I suggest looking for a 3/4TB USB/TB drive for your desktop backups.

Yes, that will work.

Absolutely and certainly. I do not expect you to get into any trouble, though. 😉

I checked my external USB-connected backup drives, and this is what they look like.

Hi Loner T!

I have issue like this with my director's mac. Could you help please? The problem is: we can not see Macintosh HD in Bootcamp Windows 7.

In the disk management of Windows I see macintosh disk but without any letter and I am not allowed to add it.

I have read everything in this post but I could fix my issue. So please help to solve it. Here is the commands outputs:

Your MBR is customized and no longer show the Recovery HD and OS X partitions. Please download GPT Fdisk from http://sourceforge.net/projects/gptfdisk/ and install it (If you are using OS X El Capitan, you will need additional steps).

Rebuild MBR to match the new GPT information thus resetting the Hybrid MBR. Use defaults for other questions (like partition codes). The only values that need modifications are the Boot flags and step 10. Accept all other defaults that Gdisk offers. Please see thesample Q&A as an example. These steps can be repeated if you make a mistake before you get to Step 12, otherwise start from Step 1 for these steps. Step 6 has numbers which are typed with a space between the numbers. Please see the sample Q&A before you execute these steps.

  1. Sudo gdisk /dev/rdisk0
  2. P (Print list of parts)
  3. R (Recover)
  4. O (print current Hybrid MBR)
  5. H (chooses Hybrid)
  6. Partitions numbers to be hybridized: 2 3 4
  7. Y (Good for GRUB question)
  8. N (part 2 boot flag)
  9. N (part 3 boot flag)
  10. Y (part 4 boot flag make NTFS bootable partition)
  11. O (print current Hybrid MBR)
  12. W (Write the new MBR)
  13. Y (Yes! write the new MBR)
  14. Reboot

Here is sample Q&A for this section. Please notice the Press Enter/Return.

Place EFI GPT (0xEE) partition first in MBR (good for GRUB)? (Y/N): Y

Creating entry for GPT partition #2 (MBR partition #2)

Enter an MBR hex code (default AF): Press Enter/Return

Set the bootable flag? (Y/N): N

Creating entry for GPT partition #3 (MBR partition #3)

Enter an MBR hex code (default AB): Press Enter/Return

Set the bootable flag? (Y/N): N

Creating entry for GPT partition #4 (MBR partition #4)

Enter an MBR hex code (default 07): Press Enter/Return

Set the bootable flag? (Y/N): Y

Please test.

Please start a new discussion to avoid confusion with the OP. Editing the MBR is not a good idea, if you drive is a CoreStorage volume. It can cause corruption. Can you post the output of commands used in this discussion on the new thread? It would help to determine the next steps. You may be able to revert the CS volume to JHFS+, based on your output.
