how can the ipod download information when wi-fi is NOT an option?

wi-fi is NOT an option where we live. how can we download songs by connecting the ipod to the computer (which is a PC)? when i connect it, the computer just views the ipod as a device from which to download photos - DCIM is the ONLY option. please help. extremely frustrated. nearest apple store is more than 2 hours away. and when i took a previous ipod there it worked fine in their supercharged wi-fi environment. back here in the real world, it's just an expensive, lifeless source of irritation.

iPod touch, Mac OS X (10.6.8)
