what kind of update should i do on a 2007 imac?

My wife's friend gave me her 2007 imac (this is my first apple computer)

it's 2 GHz with 1GB memory

running 10.5.8 leopard

I just ordered snow leopard.

Now I think i may be doing it backwards. Should I have updated the memory and how much? is there a point of no return.

with more memory I guess I could have gone for a newer os.

Would anyone care to suggest how far to go, or is the machine too old to invest in?

Thanks

iMac, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

1GB memory is the bare minimum requirement for Snow Leopard. You should have at least 2GB to run Snow Leopard and at least 4GB to run any later OS. It can handle up to 6GB: http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/specs/imac-core-2-duo-2.0-20-inch-alu minum-specs.html.

It's compatible with the latest OS but you need Snow Leopard first: http://apple.com/osx/specs. When you get Snow Leopard, it comes with 10.6.3. Run Software Update to get it to 10.6.8.
