My MacBook Pro lately has been running slow.

Not really much to see.

"...and lately it has been running slow and lagging horribly..." Is there something you installed (software) or changed (hardware) before that began to happen?

There are (were) a lot of users here that had hardware issues with the 2011 Macboo Pro (the graphics card), I advise you to contact Apple asap and have it diagnosed: to correct this there was or maybe still is a special operation by Apple.

This was recommended to do yourself, quote For this type of issue, Apple suggests that restarting an affected Mac in Safe Mode, or resetting NVRAM/PRAM will solve the problem. In severe cases, a clean install of OS X is recommended unquote.

There are a few other things to do but not serious:

-- uninstall Google Chrome: this seriously spills resources and is not very safe: if you do want an alternative for Safari, use Firefox or Opera.

-- uninstall the Google updater that was installed secretly on your computer by Google: here you can download an uninstaller

this may release considerable resources.

-- the Java software is not necessary in Mavericks: in System preferences open Java, and disable it, then

in MacintoshHD-->Library-->LaunchDaemons delete the two com.oracle.....plist entries, and

in MacintoshHD-->Library-->LaunchAgents delete the one com.oracle....plist

then restart the mac and empty the trashbin

then in SystemPreferences CTL+click the Java applet and choose "remove...".

-- in Finder click the GO menu, then hold the Alt(option) key and choose Library, in there open the LaunchAgents folder, in there delete

com.apple.CSConfigDotMacCert......plist

and

com.facebook.videochat......plist

-- Start ActivityMonitor and click the Name column, search for AdobeResourceSynchronizer , select it, click the little x button (top left) and ForceQuit this process.

in SystemPreferences-->Users&Groups-->LoginItems remove AdobeResourceSynchronizer with the minus sign underneath.

This may release considerable resources.

And at last but not least, think about a good backup protocol.

if it is still there, that must enough to stop Google Updater.

-- The Java applet in SystemPreferences:

you have it disabled now, I suppose.

in Finder go to Startupdisk (MacintoshHD) -->Library-->PreferencePanes and there delete the Java PrefPane.

you have removed the com.oracle....plists I suppose.

(secure) empty the trash bin.

can you give a list of all applications that are are not Apple in the Applications folder and the Utilities folder

Please describe the problem in as much relevant detail as possible. The "etrecheck" fad hasn't made that step any less necessary. The better your description, the better the chance of a solution.

For example, if the computer is slow, which specific actions are slow? Is it slow all the time, or only sometimes? When did it start to be slow? Did you change anything just before it started? Have you seen any alerts or error messages? Have you done anything to try to fix it? Most importantly, do you have a current backup of all data? If the answer to the last question is "no," back up now. Ask if you need guidance. Do nothing else until you have a backup.

I had similar slow startup problems on my Early 2011 MBP 13 2.7 16GB. Apple Store replaced the hard drive cable during it's last weeK of Apple Care (3 yrs.).

That helped significantly but I must say....it's not as snappy as it used to be.

I would never install an anti-virus on a Mac. Mac OSX is very secure.

Best Buy really tried to push me into installing Kaspersky Internet Security on my new 2014 Air. They keep pestering me with emails. Best Buy and others benefit from all of the "crap" that these suites dump on your computer. They are almost as bad a the things they purport to defend against.

Uninstall the adware as well: Go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any extensions that you do not recognize or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone.

PeonyB, the Adobe entry in LaunchDaemons can stay.

Of the non-Apple apps, I would uninstall Caffeine, MemoryClean (must go!), you may delete the iMovie folder (not with Appcleaner, just drag it to the Trash).

About antivirus: that sort of apps should NOT be on your mac: uninstall it, like John Galt said, I strongly support that.

It may have, why not start iMove.app en see what happens, it is probably OK.

About the other three: it is imperative that iAntivirus is uninstalled, do as John said, I also advise very strongly to uninstall MemoryClean !, and also to uninstall Caffeine.
