You may have inadvertently installed it:

http://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3036

Macupdate and other Mac related sites indiscriminately advertise it, and while you can block popups with Safari, Firefox has a much better popup blocker.

A few ad blocker software titles exist for the Mac, but they frequently need updating with either the operating system updates or the browser update.

Mackeeper is a malicious pop-up, probably generated by the government. No matter how many times I use the Terminal method to block Mackeeper, it or they create/generate a new web domain by adding a number just to get around the blocks:

127.0.0.1 http://mackeeperapp2.mackeeper.com/

127.0.0.1 http://mackeeperapp3.mackeeper.com/

127.0.0.1 http://mackeeperapp4.mackeeper.com/

127.0.0.1 http://mackeeperapp5.mackeeper.com/

127.0.0.1 http://mackeeperapp2.mackeeper.com/landings/land/1/ron_cleanprot17/

Or, this crap comes from Apple, or some other corporation that spends lots of money for endless domains, or controls the domain realm for free. How else has it gotten around Safari's pop up blocker for so many years, or more than a decade, and just keeps generating new domain with the same template? I'd hate to test how many Mackeeper domains they would actually create just to get around my blocks.

This is helpful, thank you!!!

I didn't see exact names as you've written here under the different Library folders but I know the date when I downloaded search engine and a player to run streams. I just moved all those files of said date to trash.

And I think I was actually able to clean my computer of those annoying non-stop ads.

Thank you!!!
