I've got a new MacBook Pro 15" and all of a sudden the Ethernet connection is no longer working. When I go to to "Network" it does not show and Ethernet status nor is "Built-in Ethernet" available (not even greyed out) in the "Show" drop-down menu.
The cable is plugged into a Gigabit Switch (with which I've had no problem connecting in the past) and I have tried two different cables but the result is the same.
I got a new computer but still no connect.
I am (not)connecting by PPPoE using DSL.
In the system log it tells me PAP authentication failed.
I'm going over to OSX Tiger to dig deeper.
I had lost my DSL password and so could only try using my transferred password. In the course investigating this problem I rediscovered my password and tried typing into my MacBook Pro…still no connect.
However in the course of my study I accidentally disclosed that password on the web and had to change it. When I entered the new password into the MacBook Pro it worked. I suspect that the cause was the fact that when the password was first selected the mac used ASCII with 8 bits per character but now UT16 is used with 16 bits per character.
I am also having this problem. I just got my logic board replaced for a RAM slot issue, and now the Ethernet is not working properly (as described above). I brought my computer into the office today and it worked for a couple of hours, then it failed. I could also not get it working last week, and also at another location I had a similar issue. I have NEVER had an ethernet problem - so I can't imagine it'd be anythign but a hardware issue.
Will update when I get it back from the mac store.
