My iphone 4 os 7.1.2 has stalled on the telephone favourates screen. As you realise it is old and the on/off switch has stopped working so I use the accesability screen option instead. I can access that via the black dot. I can switch the sound on and off via the side switch and the phone rings on an incoming call but I cannot answer it or do anything else. Any suggestions please?

You are correct. With a non-functioning on/off switch it is going to be hard to do a reset, which is what the phone needs. What happens if you press on the home button? You can try the home button and the accessibility button in the power off mode to try to get a reset, or you can at least use the accessibility button to power the phone off, and then plug it in to power it back on again. See if that helps.

On tapping the home tab it just goes out of the accesability screen and back to favourites. I can link into Itunes but it asks me to turn off "find my phone" before it can restore and I am not able to do that,
You can log into your iCloud account on the computer via www.icloud.com, then remove the phone from your account there which will turn off Find My iPhone. You can restore then.
