It sounds like you want to see whether or not your message has been seen by the recipient. You can enable this for iMessages in your settings. The function is called Read Receipts:

Go to Settings > Messages to set options for Messages

Sorry Clover, but SMS does not have that sort of capability with any manufacturer or carrier. However, iMessages is still a great way to double check if someone has read your message provided they have an iPhone with iMessaging.
