When I initially connected my mac to airport time capsule, the backup was always automatic. But, now for reasons unknown to me it says- backup when Mac next plugged in ! I have checked the options section and the box that says "backup while battery on power" is not ticked - so I would presume it should back up on starting the computer each time...

found the answer to my problem! and it is simple- keep the backup while on battery power checked and then the next backup time shows automatically ! Somehow it does not make sense, but works...
If you are using mavericks there is a whole bunch of bugs. Even Apple seems to have finally confessed (like pulling 4" nails to make them do that!!) That Mavericks maybe not the greatest on networks with TM.
If "Back up while on battery power" is unchecked, the Mac will not back up while the power supply is disconnected.....so there would be no "next" scheduled backup time if that were the case.
