New Router cannot connect to 192.168.1.1 Help Please

Hey Guys,

I had an old DSL router connected to my mac via WIFI and it used 192.168.1.1 to connect to the mac to simply log in and edit the settings. been some years and I thought of getting a better router which simply has a longer range. Now I'm trying to log in to the routers home page where I can configure it on the manual it says I must go to my browser and simply write 192.168.1.1 but it takes me back to the old routers login how can I add a new IP login or simply rest this old one to my new Router homepage?

note: The new one requires me to have an ethernet connected to my iMac and then the router to be connected to my DSL Router.

Im using Mavericks on an IMac

Please help Thank you.

iMac (27-inch Mid 2011), OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)

This isn't much of a computer issue per-sey. But rather a network issue.

However, when you type 192.168.1.1 and it takes you to your original DSL modem's webpage. Look for an area where there is a list of connected devices, idk how it would be labeled on your modem's webpage. Jot down all the IP addresses that you see and test each one. (DO NOT post them here.)

When testing them you may come across your new router's IP address. It most like is different as compared to the one that is on the label that is attached to the router's bottom. The reason is because the 192.168.1.1 is assigned to the "first" router. Since this new router is basically a second one, the first router has assigned a new IP address to it. That's what you have to figure out, what is the new IP address. Once you figure it out, you'll need to use that IP address to configure the settings. You may also want to tape it to the bottom for any future changes you need to do. BUT also keep in mind that it may change due to a power outage. Though highly unlikely.

Your post is pretty confusing. This makes it sound like you purchased a new DSL modem/router:

Been some years and I thought of getting a better router which simply has a longer range. Now I'm trying to log in to the routers home page where I can configure it on the manual it says I must go to my browser and simply write 192.168.1.1

But you then write:

but it takes me back to the old routers login how can I add a new IP login or simply rest this old one to my new Router homepage?

By that, do you mean you have both the old and new DSL modems connected to your Mac. Or one modem/router is plugged into the other and then one or the other to the Mac?

Okay, it sounds like you have a working setup, though you're doing it the hard way. What you should do:

1) Remove the old DSL modem/router from the setup entirely. You don't need it.

2) If you have wireless devices that were connecting to the old one, change the passcode for the new router to be the same as the old one. Then you don't have to reconfigure your wireless devices to talk to the new modem. Either that, or take the time to update your devices to use the passcode set by the manufacturer of the new modem.

3) All of your devices; Macs, iPhone, iPad, TiVo, whatever - should be set to connect "Using DHCP", or "Automatic", however it's phrased. The router then automatically assigns them an IP address that doesn't conflict with another device. There's no need for you to set the IP addresses on each device manually.
