I am unable to restore my 3rd Gen Apple TV. Any tips?

I have a 3rd gen Apple TV that is stuck on the Apple Logo with flashing lights when plugged into my TV. I attempted to restore by plugging it into my computer using a micro USB but it will not show up in iTunes. I also put it into DFU mode and that doesn't seem to be helping as far as getting iTunes to recognize the devise.

I tried everything to restore my Apple TV also and finally found something that worked for me. I unhooked the Ethernet cable from the back of my wireless router and hooked it directly to the back of the Apple TV. I then hooked the HDMI cable from the Apple TV to the TV and plugged both in to the outlet. I was finally able to get the menu up for the Apple TV. (Before this, Apple TV was unable to recognize the wireless and was stuck on setting the date/time and the menu would not come up.) I hope this helps someone.

Sometimes if iTunes doesn't see a device for me, whether my iPhone or iPad, a simple restart of my Mac is usually enough to get it working. I wonder some of the same tips that Apple lists for iOS devices not being recognized by iTunes would work for Apple TV as well.

Mac: iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for OS X

WIndows: iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows

Follow the steps that vazandrew linked.

When it says

Apple TV (3rd generation): Connect one end of the micro-USB cable to the back of your Apple TV, and the other end to one of your computer's USB ports. Connect the power cable from your Apple TV to a power outlet.

In my experience you may need to unplug and plug the power back in once or twice, though after reading this, it seems you just have to do it after plugging the USB in.

I have followed the steps provided in the link and made sure I have been providing power after the USB connection. Just to clarify, is it indeed necessary to switch the Apple TV to DFU mode immediately after powering up? Also, is this done by holding the menu and play/pause buttons on the remote until the light flashes rapidly then returns to a slower flashing rate? It seems no matter how many times I unplug and plug it hasn't changed anything.

I really appreciate the help and guidance you have been providing.
