USB Audio requires additional configuration for Audio. It is far simpler to just use the Analog separately. The HW does have the ability to produce the combined signal, but probably requires firmware update on the MBP. It is about USD10 cheaper too. 😉
It's not hard, just pick the USB external device as the output and the audio will be incorporated in the HDMI signal. One plug does it all. (Audio reverts to the internal speakers if the USB is unplugged)
Better sound quality, lower noise, less clutter. Such a deal.
It is not a question of it being hard or easy, but unattended setup. Two cables which can be independently connected, without having to go into the MBP would be easier to manage, once initially setup.
I have no clue what you mean.
1` adaptor, two plugs at the Mac end and one for the TV, plus the HDMI cable itself.
No additional gain control ahead of the TV gain, lower noise floor higher quality (less conversions from analog to digital to analog) and software or physical disconnection as methods of restoring audio from the internal speakers when required.
Once the single adaptor and the single cable are connected there is nothing else to do except enjoy the increased quality.
Let the OP decide on manageability.
Don't forget quality, as long as you don't decide that for the OP all is well.
And frankly running 2 cables over a distance in order to achieve lower quality than you would with one (and some arguable manageability advantages) for a one time connection seems like 2 steps back.
But what would I know about audio?
I purchased the two items. Can't figure out how to make them work. It seems like this may be the wrong item for the tv as I can't figure out anyplace to plug the larger end into. The smaller end fits into the laptop...any thoughts?

You may have to return the DP-to-DVI cable, as there is no DVI connector on the TV, only HDMI, VGA and Analog Audio.
You should try these two.
