imovie 10.0.5 share not working

Hi,

Updated to iMovie 10.0.5 using OS X 10.9.4 and have not been able to share my movies at all. The button does nothing and the drop down menu does nothing as well. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling and still have the same issue. I was not able to find a resolution from the community. Any help would be much appreciated. Making movies isn't that useful if you can't share them. Thanks!

Misery loves company. I thought I had messed something up in iMovie, but this thread proves it's not just me!

Issue Summary:

1) Been using iMovie successfully to import raw footage, create projects, and share to Vimeo.

2) Upgraded to Yosemite (10.10.2) and to iMovie 10.0.7.

3) Also moved library to a newly formatted external drive. All files moved easily and they are accessible. I needed to free up hard drive space.

4) Created a new project from existing footage (using the new library file in the external drive). But CANNOT share this new file to Vimeo, YouTube, to File...etc. Nothing happens when I try to share. Simply nothing.

I tried silverfoxx's recommendation and created a new library, then copied stuff over. Did not work for me.

I tried the rule of halves and took pieces of the raw imported footage...didn't work.

I brought some footage back to my Macbook's hard drive in a new library there...didn't work.

Wow...totally stumped. Fortunately for me, I didn't put a bunch of time into a new project before learning it was unsharable. However, I do need to share new projects and I'm currently dead in the water.

Has Apple focused on this at all?? Is my only solution to play with files in /System/Library ? This scares me because I don't understand the ramifications to deleting files in here.

Any help appreciated.

Following my note from earlier today, I have some info that may be of help to others. I spent an hour on the phone with some very helpful Apple folks.

Short Term Solution - there is a workaround to the problem.

Long Term Solution - there is an engineer assigned to my specific case.

I went through two levels of tech support and both were helpful.

Level 1 Support:

  1. Hold down option + command keys and, while holding them down, launch the iMovie application
  2. Took me through some clicks to reset iMovie default settings (can't remember the clicks)
  3. Didn't work
  4. After that, I opened the finder and clicked on the Go menu. Then held down option key so the Library option appeared...clicked on it. Then clicked on Application Support. Then clicked on iLifeMediaBrowser. When we determined it was empty, moved onto the next solution. Not sure what he was looking for in there.
  5. From the Library menu we then removed the com.apple.imovie. p list thingy
  6. Didn't work

Level 2 Support:

  1. Opened System Preferences and opened Users & Groups
  2. Unlocked the list of users
  3. Created a new system user (must remember password created) and gave this person Admin access
  4. Then went to Apple menu and clicked Log Out <user name>
  5. Then logged into the new user I had just created
  6. When logged in as new user, I opened iMovie
  7. With iMovie open I was able to open my library on my external hard drive and was able to easily Share movies

Boom! Short term workaround is a pain, but it worked. The level 2 support person said my case was not unique, but there were usually nuanced issues specific to each case. An Apple engineer is supposed to look at the data they scraped from my system (this part made me nervous) and will get back to me within a week. In the meantime, I can access my library and projects from the temp user I created. The issue has something to do with a system upgrade (Yosemite?) but only when sharing files. You can still do your normal project workflow from your main user login, then, when ready to share a project, log into the new user you created and share from there.

Best way to launch the library you want is to double click on it. This way ensure the correct version of iMovie automatically launches.

Hope that helps.

Thank you for posting this detailed explanation. I followed all instructions (even tried all options you mentioned, including those that didn't work for you), but now having a problem with iMovie saying new user has no permission for events and projects. So went to Preferences: sharing and opened read & write permission for access to all original user files. Still no luck. Anyone else have this problem?

Well I got this .

Looks like Apple may have screwed up with the updating.

I just tried an update, and the update tells me that I have a version installed that is too new for my OS!

OS X 10.9.5 installed

Current iMovie version 10.0.5

and the update is trying to install 10.0.7, which the iTuens store sees as OLDER than my current 10.0.5

I think some of the Apple upgrades to iMovie are just not compatible with anything older than Yosemite. They must have screwed up big time

I found this to not work as well. Then I figured it out.

The title was simply too long.

That's it. I found I was able to upload to YouTube via the web browser, however, it would only let me upload it after I shortened the title. iMovie was simply not giving me that warning - it just didn't publish it. I shortened it in iMovie, and things went fine again.

I hope that helps someone, it just took me 4 hours to figure that out after Applecare couldn't figure it out.

Good luck!
