Okay, I should have been more precise: I try to keep compression to a minimum. When I first started doing this, I noticed that the quality of a direct import from iMovie (v. 06, 08, 09) to iDVD (from the file or share menu) resulted in a poorer quality whereas the same footage being exported from iMovie at highest settings (and then dragged into iDVD as a "finished" .mov" resulted in a very noticeable quality difference. I've been using these settings to export from iMovie 06 HD (depending on which camera the video was shot in, it'll either be 720p or 1080p):

I have completely forgotten about the iMovie method for creating a picture/image slideshow.

I still use iMovie '05/’06 from time to time for just making quick movies.

I completely forgot that this can be used for slideshows, also.

The images, though, if I remember correctly, have to be very good, fairly high resolution images. You can't use low resolution Jpeg images.

Totally forgotten about iMovie.

Strange that.

Well, the only slideshow software I really like and rate rather high because of the excellent results is Photo to Movie - have been using that for a number of years. Zooming/panning in and out/sideways results in a smooth motion which wasn't the result in iPhoto or iMovie for that matter - maybe it's changed/improved now, but the Ken Burns effect did not impress me at all. My cameras are pretty good and do produce very sharp images and videos - everyone is always amazed at the quality of my DVDs (I do the videography at a competitive and social dancing event, interspersed with slideshows of happy attendees, as well as the professional show and the result of my "production" winds up in several states and Canada as well as Europe).

You do not need any special authoring program to burn a slideshow, just follow the process directly from iPhoto.

OK I don't need any special authoring program Ammmm? When I try that I get a DVD with a iPhoto library on it. (I select all the photos in an event then goto share and burn) I thought wrongly that it would be as easy as they LOL NOT!!! All I want to make is a DVD I can put in a friends DVD player connected to there TV and display the photo's using the DVD remote to move between them. I do NOT want a slideshow, just a kodak format photo DVD. No special authoring program needed?

Sorry for any bad spelling I am dyslex.

Selecting photos and burning to disk does exactly that.

If you want select some photos and make a slideshow, do that instead. To make a slideshow out of the selected photos, click Share>Slideshow. It will create a slideshow that you can then edit the titles, themes, and music. You can then export that as a Movie.

If you want it to play on a DVD player, you'll need DVD authoring software such as iDVD or Encore (although, some DVD players will play certain movie formats burned to a disk--it appears yours isn't one of those).

Barney: I did just that but I got a DVD with a iPhoto library with the photo's I selected in it. This is not what I wanted "A DVD that can be played on a DVD player" and so this was not ".....exactly that" I think that we both agree that for "...exactly that(thing that I wanted)" you do need something like iDVD but Apple no longer supply iDVD so what software dose Apple supply to do that?

You do not mention what version of OS X you are using?

You need iDVD or Roxio Toast to render/author/burn a DVD that will be playable on any DVD player.

There is no other way to create a DVD that will play on any standard DVD player.

iPhoto nor iMovie could create image slideshows to a DVD playable on any standard, external DVD player without converting the data to the standard DVD format without either iDVD OR Roxio Toast Titanium.

Both iDVD and Roxio Toast will work all the way up to Yosemite.

If you want all the bells and whistles of iDVD, then you need to purchase the complete iLIfe '09 suite of apps, but do only a custom install to just install the iDVD app and iDVD themes and nothing else.

OR purchase, install and use Roxio Toast to create the proper DVD player, playable format.

There is NO other options to be able to create a DVD player playable disc.

There is no "free" app that can create a standard playable DVD.

Sorry.

Good Luck!

Did what? Use iPhoto to create a Slideshow. Then, select the slideshow and export it as a Movie. Then, import that movie into iDVD or some other DVD authoring software and create a DVD from that software.

That doesn't sound anything like,

I select all the photos in an event then goto share and burn

MichelPM thanks for the replay it is a good one and unless any one can think of any other, it is the right answer. I use/like iDVD the point I was trying to make is iDVD is old now and Apple have a histroy of dropping old app's. Take Aperture Apple is about to remove it from the App store, when will they do the same with iLife? If they do then the only altinative to making this sort of DVD will be 3rd party.

Hi Raymond,

I'm wondering if you ever got this to work. This is exactly what I'm going through right now. I've read lots of posts, spent countless hours, went into the Apple store last night and was suggested I buy toast, which I did and ....... DVD still won't play in a DVD player. I also spent 2 hours on the phone with Apple Support last night and even they were stumped. I'm working on a senior class project and can't believe my Mac is such trouble. I've made several slideshows in the past using Roxio Photoshow with my PC and never had an issue. I am beginning to regret buying an iMac.

I am curious if you found something that has worked for you. I can burn to a DVD that will play in another mac but not on a DVD player. What good is a movie on DVD if it can't be played in a player. Would love any help from the community!

I have 10.9.5 21.5" iMac OS X

I created a slideshow in iPhoto. I then exported it to my desktop. Applications I've used to burn are Burn, Wondershare, Toast. I went up to a friends tonight to try this process on her iMac it I was able to burn to a DVD and when I brought it home, it played in my DVD player. There is something with my iMac. Apple seems to know about this issue, yet can't seem to give me a solution.

Well, I don't know how you arrived at that supposition. There is something on your Mac, most likely software related, that is not functioning as it should. If it is working on your friend's Mac (and it works on both of mine), then I'd hesitate to call it an issue.

You might want to check your Mac - check your OS, your software versions to see if they're the right ones for the OS version you are running. I'd try repairing permissions (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility).

After burning a slideshow from iPhoto export to a DVD, it will not play on my DVD player OS X 10.9.4
