Hey guys, even though I've got 500mb of RAM available for OSX to use the spinning beachball comes up every now and again and when it appears I’m unable to do anything other than move my mouse. I’m running latest version of OSX Mavericks.

Did the spinning beach ball stop in the Safe Mode? If so, that might indicate a 3rd party application is causing the problem. The Safe Mode also resets some caches. If you still had the SBB, reboot normally. You should not have to be in the Safe Mode to run the combo update.
Hey guys, I just did the following:
-- Installed update OSX 10.9.5
-- Ran 'Verify Disk Permissions' and 'Repair Disk' in Recovery Mode before I booted into OSX.
What can I do from here?

The benefit of the COMBO updater isn't about the current update - it's that it replaces all the updated files from all previous updates. This increases the chance that it'll fix any accidentally corrupted file, from previous updates.
Yes, it's true - this is generic, "shotgun" maintenance. But sometimes it works.
So try the 10.9.5 COMBO:
OS X Mavericks 10.9.5 Update (Combo)
And like Eric said, after observing whether you have the issue in Safe Boot, just restart normally and see if it has helped there. And tell us, please.

Since I've installed the new update OSX 10.9.5, do you still want me to install the older combo update?

Try the combo update 10.9.5 that Greg suggested.
When in the Safe Mode do you still have the spinning beach ball? If so, the could indicate a 3rd party application is the problem Booting into the Safe Mode also resets things.
After the Safe Mode, boot normally.

The OSX Combo update I downloaded was OSXUpdCombo10.9.4. Where can I download the OSX Combo update that includes the most recent OSX 10.9.5 update?

While in the Safe Mode, see if you have the spinning beach ball. Once there, reboot normally. The Safe Mode resets some things which may clear the problem.
Alright I just tried booting into safe mode and I believe the spinning beachball appeared again.
Also, I just tried installing the combo update OSX 10.9.5, but I still get the spinning beachball.
What else can I try? I don't want to need to re-install OSX from scratch.

I think your troubleshooting thus far has pointed to a hard drive that's failing.
I think you should try Apple Diagnostics/Test, but unless it shows a clear fault (like a motherboard fault), you should plan on replacing the hard drive.

Well I ran the 'Repair Disk' in 'Disk Utility' and it said everything was ok.
