Help! Unknown Error 1428

Don't know what it is but a lot of people seem to have developed it recently and I can't find any fixes on this site.

My problems started a few days ago. Now I can't restore my iPod because of this so-called error.

C'mon Apple - I thought you hung your hat on these devices being user friendly! I don't think it's very user friendly having to spend hours trawling through support forums trying to find a fix for a problem that all of a sudden seems to be affecting a lot of people. Could this have anything to do with any recent software updates perhaps?

For anyone who is interested, I worked out a fix for this problem.....

I was getting the error 1428 when I tried to restore my iPod. It wouldn't restore and gave me this error message instead.

I was a bit leery of iTunes 7 because my problems only really started when I downloaded iTunes 7 so I started wondering what were the major differences between iTunes 6 and one of them was album art.

So I killed anything to do with downloading or playing album art, then tried restoring. This time it restored no problems, so I flashed the iPod using the AC charger, reloaded the music and.....no more problems (touch wood).

Cheers,

ST

The Problem
You’ve updated your iTunes to version 7.0 (in Windows XP) and tried to update your iPod Video 30 gb but it results in the following error: The Ipod could not be updated. An unkown error occurred (1417)

You then try to restore your iPod in an attempt to get around this error. After starting the Restore you get the following error: The Ipod could not be restored. An unkown error occurred (1428)

The problem is that with only some, iPods the unit is prematurely unmounting and remounting the computer. These are Apple’s words, not mine.

Apple is currently working on finding a resolution.

You can find resolution by calling Apple Support at 1-800-275-2273, working with the support team to get a case number and then get a transfer to a Product Specialist (if the first group can’t resolve the issue). You have to endure being on hold for a bit.

You could also try these steps that I was walked through but BEWARE – IF THIS REALLY SCREWS UP YOUR iPod OR SYSTEM SOMEHOW I’M NOT TO BLAME.

Work-around #1 – Restore the iPod
- You will be connect to your computer, execute Restore and right after the Restore progress bar appears disconnect and reconnect your iPod.
Steps:
1) Make sure iPod is not connected to your computer
2) Open iTunes
3) Connect your iPod
4) Make sure you iPod show up in iTunes
5) Right Click on your iPod and go to the Summary tab
6) Click Restore
7) A confirmation window will appear...BEFORE YOU CLICK RESTORE REMEMBER THE FOLLOWING WILL NEED TO BE DONE IN QUICK SUCCESSION
8) Click Restore
9) As soon as the progress bar appears disconnect your iPod from your computer and immediately reconnect your iPod.
10) If you still get the error (1428) go to Work-around #2

Work-around #2 – Premature Unmounting
1) Eject your iPod from iTunes.
2) Close iTunes
3) Reopen iTunes
4) Connect your iPod
5) Click on your iPod and go to the Summary Tab
6) Click on the box, “Manually manage music and videos”
7) Click okay (this will allow hopefully allow you to manage the unmounting of the iPod0
8) Click Apply
9) Eject the iPod (bottom right corner of iTunes on the Summary tab)
10) Disconnect the iPod from your computer
11) We are now going to put the iPod in Disk Mode
Note – you will need the two following steps in quick succession so read ahead

11 b) As soon as the apple appears press the Play/Pause button and the Center button at the same time until the iPod transitions to the Disk Mode screen
12) The iPod should now have a monochrome screen and show in Disk Mode
13) Reconnect the iPod
14) Click on your iPod and go to the Summary Tab – make sure the “Manually manage music and videos” box is checked.
15) Click on Restore
Note – In the next steps you need to carefully watch your iPod and be ready to disconnect and reconnect your iPod
16) At the confirmation window click Restore
17) On the iPod – when the checkmark appears immediately disconnect and reconnect your ipod (this unmounts and remounts the iPod before iTunes times out)
18) This should get start a full Restore. If after a few minutes the progress only keeps cycling do the following and go to Work-around #3
19) Go to My Computer
20) Find you iPod as a drive – right click and Eject it.
21) Close My Computer
22) Shut down iTunes, using Ctl, Alt, Delete if it does not respond.

17) The message that iPod is being restored and ‘do not disconnect’ will show up
18) When the Restore is complete, your iPod should be at the Main Menu screen – it’s now okay to disconnect and use normally (the iPod is updated)
19) Reconenct your iPod
20) When your iPod appears click on the Summary tab and uncheck “Manually manage music and video”
21) Click Apply
22) Close and reopen iTunes
23) Click on your iPod in iTunes and go to the Summary tab. Confirm the Software version is 1.2. If so, use your iPod and iTunes as you normally do.
24) If not call Apple.

Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou! A very helpful post and hopefully it will be helpful to other people with the same issue.

It really helps to know that there is actually a recognized issue and that Apple is working on a resolution. It's not just a figment of my imagination!

It's also handy to know the correct terminology to use for the problem if I need to talk to Apple about it, I can more accurately describe the issue.

I will keep a copy of your suggested workarounds for use as Plan B if my quick fix fails again.

I appreciate the time you took to answer my question.

Cheers,

After updating to ITunes 7 with my iPod mini, I successfully downloaded some songs, but then received a Window error relating to file transfers, and not all the songs transferred. iTunes said that my iPod would not read the songs due to a format problem. I read a heap of forums, and after 6 hours of unsuccessful floundering, I found your message, and can advise:
IT WORKED!
However, it's not so straightforward. I had to find the original CD, otherwise you don't ever get to the Error 1415 or Error 1418 messages. So I reset it then ran the original CD, then ran iTunes 7, then tried to Restore. You then get the 1418 error. Then, I tried about 6 times to press RESTORE then quickly unplug the iPod as soon as I saw the progress bar trying to restore. You only have a second or so, otherwise the error will pop up. Persist! I unplugged it and plugged it back in after about half a second, using the USB cable into the docking station. I was on a four port hub, and the PC has lots of USB extension cables and hubs. Other posts suggest unplugging and changing USB ports, but I didn't bother. Eventually, the progress indicator went further than the first few percent and I was away. Then it has to update its library, so be patient. I assume Apple is no longer bothered by releasing poorly tested software and has joined the other greedy fat producers of consumer rubbish. Unfortunately, like all of us, we're locked in to Apple since we've downloaded so many iTunes! Nice marketting ploy to keep us dedicated. Anyway, I've just finished updating my new Logitech MX Revolution, which has had a bug from new, and was fixed with the latest release of their Setpoint software. Seems this is the way of the modern world.

I tried option #1 like 10 times now and can't get it to work.

I can't do option #2 because
" Click on your iPod and go to the Summary Tab – make sure the “Manually manage music and videos” box is checked."

That isn't available on the Summary tab. My ONLY choice is to restore 😟

What's really pathetic is that these posts go back for months yet they still haven't managed to fix the problem.

This is my 2nd 80gb ipod with this problem. I guess the lesson here is NEVER try to restore as it doesn't work.
