Apple USB Ethernet Host unusable

Installing iTunes 11.4 I got a message:

The system extension "//System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext" was installed improperly & cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it or contact the product's vendor for an update.

Seeing this, I searched for "Apple USB Ethernet Host" in Apple support & the App Store but came up empty.

Is this something I need to fix? And if so, how?

Did you trash the "System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext" file?

After you trash it reinstall iTunes 11.4, not from software update, but from the download on the Apple web site, http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

Installing iTunes 11.4 will replace the missing "System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext" file.

Then restart your Mac.

My advice is to restore the kernel extension in question from a backup prior to installing iTunes 11.4, then downloading the version from the Apple site (NOT Software Update) and installing it again. I did this and am able to sync my iPhone without issue. It may help your situation.

Had this issue, posted my own question and got pointed to this thread. Given the words in the kext's name, I thought it had to do with booting from a bootable Flash drive connected to a USB port (which is more accurately called a host than the phone)! There seems to be ANOTHER symptom not mentioned in this thread... just launched iTunes 11.4. Throws up a big dialog about how none of the apps I have are "authorized" on my desktop. Huh?

So I follow the link to "authorize," input my uid & password and the it tells me my machine IS authorized!

Second occurrence in as many days of seriously badly designed software (the Mavericks Installer) and the upteenth version of iTunes being so winblowz-like!

Got the same problem as you people, but syncing over WiFi doesn't work either: all the occupied space show as "Other", and backing up my iPhone just won't work.

Oh, and according to iTunes, I just lost about 4Gb of free space...

Mmm, one more thing: when attempting to sync over WiFi with iTunes, the ReportCrash process starts gobbling up CPU cycles like it hasn't eaten in days... 😠

Had to open my machine to shuffle some disks around in the 4 bays, install a card (Seritek w/ 2 SSDs mounted on it) etc. Did ma sync w/my ipad... saw the "transferring purchased apps" which was probably the point where I got the "unauthorized" false message I spoke of above. It got the "determining apps to sync," saw Chrome briefly flash as one needing syncing, then boom it was over... in the fashion of the process not completing properly.

Simply terribly sloppy work... and no announcement it would be corrected or even some acknowledgement there is an issue.

FWIW, I'm on Snow Leopard (32-bit), and I finally managed to back-up my iPhone yesterday over WiFi. Problem is, I can't do the same via USB, same as you, and according to iTunes, I've only got about 3Gb of free space on my phone, when I know I've actually got closer to 6Gb.

I haven't upgraded iTunes on my PC running Windows 8.1 yet, nor do I think I will in the near future... On the "old" 11.3.x version, everything works fine.

I had the same issue. iPhone was not recognized in iTunes. I'm not very familiar with using Terminal and was unable to resolve the issues coping the commands into the terminal box so I just did it manually.

1. I followed the path: /System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost, dragged the file AppleUSBEthernetHost to the trash

2. Redownloaded iTunes from the Apple site

3. Reinstalled iTunes

4. Restarted my computer

5. All is working fine now.

Hope this helps!
