iPhone 6 Contract Free/T-Mobile?

The iPhone 6 will launch in USA with the usual carriers but I am going to Florida on holiday next week all the way from sunny England. My plan was to purchase the $650 iPhone 6 Contract free option so that I could simply place my Three Network sim inside and then just use it as normal. My question is this; When using the US Apple Store website the iPhone 6 'Contract Free' option is labelled as 'T-Mobile', will it come unlocked to any network, or will it be locked to T-Mobile?

Thanks

A concerned Brit!

I also Live Chatted with Apple here in the UK today and asked them the following questions:

- If I buy an iPhone 6 in the US will it work with my current O2 sim card?

- Yes but I probably won't be able to get 4G coverage

- Is the warranty international as it is for Macs etc.

- Yes, absolutely. There are restrictions on Applecare+ but the warranty is international.

I actually took a screenshot of the chat window so if I ever have a problem with the phone I'm hoping to buy I can take it into an Apple store here and prove what I was told! Hope this helps 🙂

Now Chatting with De Shaune

Hello!

Hello my name is De'Shaune! I would be happy to help you with any questions that you may have!

If I purchase the iPhone 6 Contract-free at $650 from an Apple store, will it be locked to T-Mobile or not?

The T-mobile iPhones are unlocked, However it comes with a T-Mobile sim card for activation.

Which carrier are you with?

I am actually from the UK, but I am visiting Florida for two weeks on Monday

I am with Three Mobile in the UK

How Kool! We recommend that you contact your carrier to check the compatibility.

apparently you do different models and I need a specific model to work with Three in the UK, can you check to see which one I should ask for?

You will need to ask the your carrier if the T-Mobile iPhone 6 will be compatible with their network.

IMPORTANT RESTRICTION FOR iPHONE AND iPAD SERVICE.

Apple may restrict warranty service for iPhone and iPad to the country where Apple or its Authorized Distributors originally sold the device.

Similar to what gavin said. I spoke with apple specialist's (2 at the same time) because I was being given the run'around hand jobby. One specialist said the t-mobile phone is a no contract phone, that happens to be unlocked... The other specialist said the t-mobile phone is a no contract phone, that may be able to be unlocked after calling my carrier. I was literally being fed two different lines simoltaneously.. incredible. Here are some screenshots from my conversations. Also a bit of background info. I am an american living in italy the past 3 years using TIM, and have been using no contract iPhones bought from the apple store with t-mobile sim cards already inside upon purchase. I have never bought a "no-contract" phone.

There seems to be a lot of confusion around the T-Mobile contract-free device. Here is what is on the Apple iPhone 6 site concerning the T-Mobile device:

If you have selected an iPhone for T-Mobile, it will come with the appropriate nano-SIM, but you will need to contact T-Mobile or visit an Apple Retail Store to activate your iPhone.

In order to get T-Mobile to activate it, you would need to pay for at least a one-month plan with T-Mobile.

Here is the information on an Unlocked device which has not yet been released. It will be released at some later point in time:

If you have selected an unlocked GSM phone, you can insert your own nano-SIM card or obtain one from the supported GSM carrier of your choice and activate it in order to use your iPhone.

So, the T-Mobile device is contract-free, in that you are not locked into a 2-year contract with T-Mobile. However, you have to have a plan with T-Mobile to activate it. Until it is activated, it cannot be used with any other SIM cards.

Cheers,

What can I say. I have pasted what Apple has in writing on their information site for the iPhone 6. You have a chat with an Apple representative that directly contradicts what the Apple site is saying. What we seem to have here is a failure to communicate. At least a failure to communicate the same information from two separate, yet equally Apple resources.

I don't have an answer for you. However, I can tell you that I went to the T-Mobile site, and went through the pre-order process. Before I could complete the process, and, in theory, activate the device, I had to select a Service Plan from T-Mobile. So, in order to get the device to the point where you can put any compatible SIM into it, you are going to have to pay for at least one month of service from T-Mobile. I don't think they would care if you wanted to change carrier the next day, but either way, they are going to get one month's payment from you up front.

So, you decide....

Again, this is directly from Apple concerning the contract-fee (not unlocked) T-Mobile device:

If you have selected an iPhone for T-Mobile, it will come with the appropriate nano-SIM, but you will need to contact T-Mobile or visit an Apple Retail Store to activate your iPhone.

You are paying $650 because you are getting a contract-free device. Meaning, (and T-Mobile uses this as one of their major selling points), you are not locked into a 2-year contract. T-Mobile contracts are month by month. In order to get the T-Mobile phone activated, you will have to pay for at least one month of a T-Mobile Service Plan.

Unlocked devices are not going to be released from Apple until a later date. Here is what they say about how the unlocked devices will work once they are released:

If you have selected an unlocked GSM phone, you can insert your own nano-SIM card or obtain one from the supported GSM carrier of your choice and activate it in order to use your iPhone.

At this point in time, an unlocked version of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus is not available. You must have it activated by T-Mobile. End of story.

No, on the release date the T-Mobile phone was listed as an unlocked model on the Apple Store and was originally sold that way. A T-Mobile 5s purchased from them was locked. The website was later changed and no longer listed the T-Mobile as unlocked. If you purchased a T-Mobile phone from Apple at a later date it was locked.
