Yes, it IS possible to have phones with CDMA and GSM chips but they're bulkier and user more battery power which is why networks avoid them.

Very true. However, it should be noted that the Verizon and Sprint versions of the phone are actually "phones with CDMA and GSM chips". They use CDMA domestically but have the option of adding a SIM for use outside of the United States.

The nanoSIM in both of those iPhones is primarily to access their LTE network in the US.

I know for a FACT that the Verizon model is unlocked and will work on either T-Mobile or AT&T out of the box.

Verizon is required by law to sell all of it's LTE phones unlocked, due to an agreement they made with the US Government over their LTE spectrum. Look it up. Note that this does not apply to non-LTE phones.

You may be able to make calls/ send texts, but mobile data won't work.. Well not from my understanding of CDMA/ GSM

Data does work, I know for a fact as I helped a friend of mine switch her Verizon iPhone 5S to PTEL (T-Mobile MVNO) and data, including LTE, works fine. You just have to add PTEL's APN settings, which can be done in the Cellular menu. The Verizon iPhone has both CDMA/GSM chips and the GSM chips is completely unlocked. The Sprint model is not though. So don't buy a Sprint phone, its the worst one to get (Sprint is very anti-unlocking).

What I don't know is if the T-Mobile full price model is unlocked. I'm hoping it is.

the T-Mobile handset is unlocked and can be used with a UK SIM card and as iphone6 (and plus) offer the widest support of LTE networks it will work with all UK networks.

If you speak to the chat team and ask for a sim free or unlocked iPhone they will say they don't sell them yet as they have to say this as the contract they have with Tmobile is that they advertise and sell the unlocked tmobile phome as a tmobile contact less not an unlocked iPhone which in essence it is.

The warranty is a risk. You can take the phone back to a UK Apple store and they reserve the right to fix the phone or knock you back and they you have to post the phone back to the U.S. (at your cost) to be fixed. It actually might be cheaper to just pay the UK Apple store to fix it at this stage. But as you are saving between £100 and £150 it's worth a risk.

Let me add to what you just said.

Regarding the warranty: despite what's been said in other posts , apple's warranty says that apple "may" restrict the warranty to the country were you bought your iphone, i don't know about the UK, but i leave in Brazil and i know FOR A FACT that here apple will honor a applecare warranty sold in the US.

I had to fix , under warranty , 2 iphones 5S and they fixed it with no problem whatsoever.

What type of "repair" did you have done?

one of then had a defective on/off button the other one had battery problems

but ,again, this was in Brazil and over a year ago, things can be different now

So why didn't you say that in your original post?

So did they replace the switch and battery or did they replace the entire iPhone?
