Error: "We couldn't create a new partition or locate and existing one" installing Windows 8.1 via Bootcamp

This error comes up when selecting a partition to Install Windows on. The partition is formatted NTFS.

Apple support said it might be because there are other USB devices plugged in but I get the same error even if the only USB is the Windows Install. Any other possible solutions?

Thanks,

Read and follow the Boot Camp instructions located here: http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/

You can not install Windows onto an already formatted drive. You have to follow the Boot Camp instructions.

Are you using an EFI boot selection? BA seems to do the partitioning correctly. What year is the MBA?

1. Using BA delete Bootcamp partition.

2. Remove all peripherals except the USB stick.

3. Recreate the USB, start W8.1 installation.

4. Let it reboot (the last attempt at interruption can cause problems).

5. Post a screen shot/image of the screen before you get the error. (You may have to use a camera/iPhone/iPod/iPad to take a photo. Please remove any personal information as you see fit).

I took it to the Genius Bar today and they told me it was a Windows problem and sent me over to the Microsoft store. Then I spent an hour and a half at the Microsoft store while they tried to get it working then they told me they thought something was wrong with the SSD. Back at the Genius Bar they ran all kinds of tests on it and couldn't find anything wrong. The Microsoft store offered to take it in and do it for me for $50 but I said no. However I still can't figure it out so I might just take it back to them.

I tried this a couple times already :/

I just tried installing rEFInd and installing Windows through that and when I try to format the partition this way I get the message "Windows might need to create additional partitions.." and then it does. When I select the largest partition I still get the same error (We couldn't create an additional partition or locate an existing one)

Sep 18, 2014 8:38 PM in response to JoeShmoe99

Do not use rEFInd. There is another option, if you want to try it. W8.1 has much better EFI support than W7 or W8.

1. Delete the current Bootcamp partition via BA.

2. Create a partition via Disk Utility and format it as Free Space. An EFI install may have issues due to graphics, but this may tell us why it is failing.

3. Using the USB that you built using W8.1 ISO and BA, it should have an EFI Boot. Power cycle and using the Alt key select EFI boot.

4. Point to the partition that was created in step 2 and see how far you can get. It will get partitioned again into an MSR (~200MB) and MS Data partitions.

Caveat: I have had issues with a 2012 13" MBP and having some keyboard/boot issues.
