If you buy the no-contract version (T-mobile) from the Apple USA store on September 12th, it will most likely be locked to T-mobile. Looks like the earliest you can get out of a T-mobile "non-contract" is after 40 days of postpaid service. T-Mobile isn't really crystal-clear on what other fees may apply, but it seems it would just be the fee for 2 months. Apple historically doesn't sell fully factory-unlocked, no-contract, no-carrier, direct-from-Apple versions of its phones until about a month or so of the carrier-specific phones going on sale. My verdict -- just wait a few more weeks. Here are copies of my transcripts with Apple and T-Mobile:

Apple:

The T Mobile iPhone is contract free, but it will include a configuration and SIM card to use with their services. The T Mobile configuration does allow for SIM cards from other countries. For unlocking to use with other carriers in the USA, you would need to contact T Mobile directly.

Thanks, do you know when a fully factory-unlocked model will be available?

We don't have that information at this time as the unlocked version of iPhone 6 Plus will not be available on the Apple Online Store or in Apple Retail Stores in the U.S. at launch.

T-Mobile:

T-Mobile: We have received your information and will connect you with a T-Mobile Chat Specialist soon.

You: Hi, are you able to answer questions about the T-Mobile Contract-Free iPhone 6?

Jennifer: Thank you for visiting T-Mobile today!

You: Hi, are you able to answer questions about the T-Mobile Contract-Free iPhone 6?

Jennifer: Just to clarify, may I ask if you're referring to a Prepaid iPhone?

Jennifer: *iPhone 6?

You: on the Apple website, there is an option to buy the new iPhone 6 as a "contract free" version with T-Mobile. I was referred to T-mobile to answer specific carrier details about this

Jennifer: Thank you for clarifying.

Jennifer: I'm glad to let you know that you can purchase an iPhone 6 and pre-order it tomorrow! The phone will be offered with our no-contract Postpaid monthly plan.

Jennifer: At T-Mobile we strive to offer you the best value possible. That’s why we’ve come up with some great plans that don’t require a contract, and have a no subsidy model to allow customers the freedom to find the device and cost that most fits their needs.

You: does this mean that the phone arrives factory unlocked?

Jennifer: The phone will be SIM locked to exclusively use T-Mobile service.

Jennifer: You may request to have T-Mobile SIM unlock your device if it meets certain criteria such as being completely paid off, active on the T-Mobile network for at least 40 days, used in the past 7 days on the same mobile number that is requesting the SIM unlock, and more.

You: ok. So I can purchase this phone, try the service for 40 days, then if I am not satisfied with the T-mobile service I can terminate my service plan and request it to be unlocked?

You: what is the fee for this?

Jennifer: May I ask which specific fee you're referring to?

You: termination fee, sim unlock fee, and any other fee applied if I choose to end my T-mobile service after 40 days.

Jennifer: I'm glad to let you know that you will not incur any termination! You will only be required to pay the remaining balance of the phone.

You: I see. so, given that 40 days is 10 days into a new monthly pre-paid agreement, do I get a pro-rated credit for the unused service for that month? or what is that process?

Jennifer: One moment please.

You: thank you, appreciate your detailed responses

Jennifer: Thank you. One moment please.

Jennifer: Thank you for patiently waiting.

You: sure please take your time

Jennifer: Thank you.

Jennifer: As I have checked, you will not get a pro-rated credit for the unused service on that month however, you will only be required to pay the service incurred prior to cancellation.

You: Ok, so I will probably have to pay for 2 months prepaid service before I am able to move to a different carrier, if I choose to do so? I just want to make sure I am clear on this.

Jennifer: Please take note that the iPhone 6 will be available with our Postpaid monthly plan and not with our Prepaid service.

You: ok, sorry for the confusion. So it will be 2 months of postpaid service applied

Jennifer: That's okay, no need to apologize. You may cancel after 40 days and pay the phone's full amount in order to request for an unlocking code.

Jennifer: You may cancel service without incurring an early termination fee. Even if you cancel Service, you will be responsible for all Service and other charges incurred prior to cancellation.

Jennifer: For more information on unlocking policy, you may call our Customer Service Team. Would that be okay with you?

You: ok, thank you for the information.

It is Absolutely Pointless to post all the chat history with T-Mobile specialists. Because they DO NOT Know anything about whether the tmobile iphone 6 are locked or unlocked. They can tell you what they were told and nothing more. End users (who have bought and used T-Mobile phones with different GSM carriers), however, can state the truth. I 100% stand by this simple concept, ALL FULL PRICE DEVICE ONLY PHONES PURCHASED FROM APPLE ARE ABSOLUTELY UNLOCKED !!!!! But you cannot use a GSM phone in CDMA network, You cannot use ATT phone with Verizon. You cannot use factory unlocked 5S with Verizon. It is not that they are locked. It is the fact that Verizon will only let you use a Verizon phone in their network. It is the specific carrier, not the phone. Full price phones are all unlocked. Read and believe.

i cant speak internationally but I bought an iPhone 6 plus from Apple online ( not from a Tmobile store) - before activating it I took out the Tmobile sim and put in my ATT sim - worked fine - even including LTE - out of paranoia I got a sim from Net10 in the US and it also worked fine

If you buy he phone from Tmobile it will be locked to Tmobile for 40 days as other have already said

LTE support internationally will probably depend on the LTE bands supported in a particular country and the LTE bands (about 20) supported by the Tmobile version of the iPhone

btw Tmobile is GSM

than you for the answer !

i'm not really sure that i know the difference between "Sim Free" and unlocked, but i want to be sure that the iPhone 6 free contract unlocked is just delivered with a t-mobile sim card with no T-mobile Configuration (Network, menus ...) ?

T-mobile is on GSM or CDMA ?

Thank you ...

Sim Free means it has no sim, it comes without a sim card inside. While it has no Sim, It may or may not be unlocked. Unlocked on the other hand means it can take any sim you place in it. It may or may not come with a sim inside i.e It may or may not be Sim Free.

Yes. The T-Mobile version bought directly form apple comes with a T-Mobile Sim card, but has nothing else to tie it to T-Mobile. iPhones unlike other brand phones do not get custom menus or other things for each carrier. The carrier may have Apps, but for the most part, there is no extra carrier customization on an iPhone by the carriers.
