Q: itunes 11.4 crashes when syncing apps to ipad / iphone

hey everyone, maybe the knowledge of the many may help, as I am rather at a loss right now!

after installing itunes 11.4, my trouble started! running 64 bit version on windows 8.1 - and latest iOS on both devices

all windows updates installed, all drivers for whatever is running on this machien are also up to date

connecting either ipad or iphone to computer, when itunes starts to sync, it gets to the point of "syncing apps to iPAD", it tries to add the first app - and crashes for good!

and yep, I went thru all the suggested thingies recommended on here:

iTunes for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8: Fix unexpected quits or launch issues

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1717

windows pops up "itunes has stopped working" ... so I headed over to the Windows Event viewer, and for the moment, itunes crashes, I find these two entries in the log file - tried a search on here, google as well, to no avail:

    Hi barbino

You're not the only one having this problem, I'm running the 32bit version of 11.4 on windows 7 and I'm having a very similar problem as you.

It crashes when I sync apps to my iPAD and iPod Touch, but it works ok when synced my iPhone 4S?

My Windows Event looks the sames as yours

I uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled it, no joy. But I have got a sort of work around for the problem. I updated all my iPhone apps on the device before I connected it to iTunes. I tried it with my iPad and iPod Touch both had all their apps updated on the device before syncing to iTunes and no syncing of apps so no crash. It's not a fix, but at least iTunes doesn't crash now. Let hope version 12.0 fixes the problem.

    Hope this helps.

Thanx for the heads up! Yeah, definitely looks the same - always a good thing you are not the only one with such a thing, I began to wonder if I had pulled a Homer here on my own by having done something stupid or so ;o) anyhow, yeah, that works, once the apps are in place, no crash, but just no transfer from computer tu iDevice ... and crash again!

yeah, also hoping here that there will be a fix for this nuisance sometime soon

I do not have a Mac, so the above solution will not work. Also it is a different problem. I do not get an extension error, mine crashed right when it goes to sync. Either my iphone or ipad, does the same thing. I tried the version before this, same thing. I think the install of 11.4 has something in the registry that causes this. Just need some time to try and find it. There were some suggestions  of copying the library to the "C" drive, but I really do not want to do that, I have all my media stored on an external drive and want to keep it that way.

It seems that  iTunes 11.4 is bad on both, on OSX and Windows.

I found a slightly less extreme solution that worked for me.

    1. Close iTunes

    2. Uninstall iTunes 11.4 (and for safety Apple Application Support, Software Update, Mobile Device & Bonjour)

    3. Download 11.3.0.54 (NOT 11.3.1.x this had the same error) from filehippo etc.

    4. Re-install

All OK and iTunes works fine from my external network file server.

Very happy not to have to copy library to c: or do anything to both iPhone 5 or iPad mini 2.  I didn't even clean the registry, so even my iTunes Media folder location was preserved, no rebooting between steps.

Hope that works for someone else.

Now just have to wait for the 54 new items to be Synced ...

And no idea what I'm going to do when my iPhone 6 arrives (and probably needs 11.4)

Same issue here... if apps on my PC and my iOS device differ in their versions (e.g. an update is availibe on one of the machines) iTunes crashes during the APP-sync process. :-( Hope Apple fixes this issue soon!

Tried this, did not work. I cannot sync my phone or ipad since this release. I have an older version on another pc, so I tried it. Works fine and have no troubles. As soon as I try the new version, here come the crash. They need to fix this version BEFORE they roll out the new versions.

I am experiencing a similar yet different issue. Every time I try syncing any device (iphone 4s, ipod nano 5th or iPad air) my PC shuts down. It started right after I updated to it 11.4. I tried everything I could think of: uninstall, reinstal, uninstalled apps I thought might be compromising iTunes. Nothing worked. I don't know what else to do. don't know if it's my PC or iTunes. (My pc is a vaio running windows 7 x64).

I Have the same problem with iTunes 11.4  on Windows 8.1 Pro 64 Bit.

Everytime I try to sync my iPhone 4s, iPad 2, iPod Touch 4 iTunes crashes when step 5 "syncing apps" starts.

I reinstalled iTunes 11.4 with the instructions on the knowledge base but the problem stays.

Tomorrow I get my new iPhone 6 so I have to find a solution. I think I need a version >=11.4 that works for syncing to ios8...

Is there a solution for me?

Will iTunes 12.0 be published soon or do I have to try 12 beta?

Also using iTunes 11.4 on Windows 8.1 Enterprise 64-bit. Crashes in the "syncing apps" stage. Happens on two different user accounts, one using an iPod Touch and one using an iPhone 5.

Clean uninstall/reinstall doesn't make any difference. Safe mode doesn't make any difference (no plug-ins installed).

Stack trace shows an unknown routine in iTunesMobileDevice.dll calling Microsoft C++ runtime routine _wstat32i64 with a null name parameter. This is definitely an iTunes 11.4 bug.
