itunes 11.4 crashes when syncing apps to ipad / iphone

hey everyone, maybe the knowledge of the many may help, as I am rather at a loss right now!

after installing itunes 11.4, my trouble started! running 64 bit version on windows 8.1 - and latest iOS on both devices

all windows updates installed, all drivers for whatever is running on this machien are also up to date

connecting either ipad or iphone to computer, when itunes starts to sync, it gets to the point of "syncing apps to iPAD", it tries to add the first app - and crashes for good!

and yep, I went thru all the suggested thingies recommended on here:

iTunes for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8: Fix unexpected quits or launch issues

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1717

windows pops up "itunes has stopped working" ... so I headed over to the Windows Event viewer, and for the moment, itunes crashes, I find these two entries in the log file - tried a search on here, google as well, to no avail:

Hi barbino

You're not the only one having this problem, I'm running the 32bit version of 11.4 on windows 7 and I'm having a very similar problem as you.

It crashes when I sync apps to my iPAD and iPod Touch, but it works ok when synced my iPhone 4S?

My Windows Event looks the sames as yours

I uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled it, no joy. But I have got a sort of work around for the problem. I updated all my iPhone apps on the device before I connected it to iTunes. I tried it with my iPad and iPod Touch both had all their apps updated on the device before syncing to iTunes and no syncing of apps so no crash. It's not a fix, but at least iTunes doesn't crash now. Let hope version 12.0 fixes the problem.

Hope this helps.

I too am running Win 8, iTunes 11.4, 64 bit. All my media and apps are stored on a NAS. This includes the actual iTunes library files. What I did was use another computer running iTunes 11.3.1.2 and since all the media is stored using a network address (NOT a mapped drive letter). All the media was easily found by iTunes. I have ran this style setup for years. This is the first issue; I hope Apple can fix this. I have my entire families' iOS device Library files this way. 10 devices in total. This way if a computer goes down, you can still access iTunes on a different computer just hold SHIFT + click the iTunes icon to pick the library needed. Right now my iTunes 11.3.1.2 is loading the apps on my iPad Air (iOS 8 from a Restore). But my office computer running iTunes 11.4 would crash on the "Copying Apps" progress bar. I hope this helps at least one person, because a problem(feature) like this may never get fixed by Apple. I am just wondering what I am going to do when both mine and my wife's iPhone 6 come in. They both will probably require iTunes 11.4. Then I'm back to searching forums.😕

Rev Run:

My setup is very similar (using NAS for media and apps). I was able to workaround the problem. My view is there is still a bug in iTunes / cloud / app validation .. but I was able to sync all my devices normally (without crashing iTunes). When I began 36 hours ago iTunes crashed on everyone of my devices ... I must have crashed iTunes 50x getting to this point .. but now all is well

After successful syncs across all devices .. I have upgraded everything to iOS8 and resynced / backup .. did have on repeat after the iOS upgrade but followed same process I outlined in my prior posting

Good luck

An utterly horrendous ITunes 11.4 bug.

Clearly, one solution is to revert to the last version of ITunes before 11.4. When you do so, you can successfully sync devices that have been upgraded to iOS8, and it will allow you to update apps on that iOS8 device as new/updated apps become available. And it will allow you to backup your iOS8 device to your NAS location (if that's where your iTunes library is).

But, when running ITunes 11.3.1 and syncing to an iOS8 device, ITunes clearly shows some errors when trying to 'read' the device. For example, it fails to interface sync with the iOS8 version of iBooks, etc. Even the 'Summary' screen describing the iOS8 device shows some errors.

So reverting to ITunes 11.3.1 is not a long term solution. It probably will not effectively work with iPhone 6s that are arriving in people's hands.

Without an apple fix to iTunes 11.4, seems very risky to port my iPhone 5s backup to a new iPhone 6 using iTunes 11.3.1.

Anyone try that yet?

Sep 18, 2014 2:22 PM in response to dontpass

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate OS and like everyone else iTunes 11.4.0.18 crashes every time I try to synch my iPhone 4S and iPad Air. Yesterday i raised this with Apple Tech Support. they recommended completely installing iTunes 11.4, including deleting certain additional program folders. Did all that and still the same problem.

It is beyond belief after 24 hours Apple have not issued a public statement acknowledging this widespread problem, but really with all their resources one would have expected an update bug fix by now.

Sonic

As I mentioned in previous post I performed all the uninstall reinstall repair steps to my iTunes and just ended up in same place. My guess is this is just a bug and has something to do with new way apple validates apps to the family feature.

Fortunately I was able to work my way out of the problem (see my previous post for explanation) and now have clean syncs on all devices from same iTunes install that just yesterday crashed EVERY sync on EVERY device. Conclusion the iTunes app can get to point where it resumes functioning without crashing.

Best of luck

Sep 18, 2014 3:20 PM in response to lottytx

With respect to all your work and time spent, Lottytx, what you describe is not a true work around.

What you have done is simply 'update' a device with apps and iOS8 via wifi without syncing. Then, when you do sync (either cabled or with an iTunes wifi sync), all that happens is that iTunes recognizes that all the 3rd party applications and media on the device are 'up to date' and therefore doesn't try to transfer any 3rd party media or applications to/from the iTunes library on your NAS.

This state is a pain in the butt to achieve, but achievable.

However, as soon as a media item or application is updated in your ITunes library on your NAS, you can no longer sync your device through ITunes because it will again crash when it gets to the point in the sync process when it tries to update the device with the updated version of the media or application in the iTunes library.

So, you can continue to 'just update everything over wifi forever' But if you want to add something NEW to your device, you will then have to download it onto your phone, then separately download it through ITunes into your ITunes library on your NAS to bring both device and library into perfect mirror state, which would then allow synching.

You can see how this will be a problem when you try to bring a new device, like an Iphone 6 or a replacement device, online using a stored backup in your library.

When you do, iTunes will try to import all the apps to the new device from the library. And, given the current problem, Crash.

What is needed is a true bugfix to solve the problem ITunes 11.4 has when interfacing with an ITunes library on a NAS. All signs point to this being the problem.

Sep 18, 2014 3:52 PM in response to dontpass

Certainly I get your point and was not convinced this was a solution but rather a workaround. But your comments did make me do some further checking along those lines. Unfortunately the new data points suggest your are completely correct.

After running clean syncs this morning I check iTunes just few minutes ago. Several apps posted new updates. I first updated iTunes apps. One of the new app updates was for LinkedIn. This is installed on one of my ipads so I ran a new sync and iTunes crashed. Keep in mind all my devices now on iOS8 after upgrading earlier today.

Either way there is bug in iTunes that presumably can only be resolved by new release of iTunes. Now it seems there is no workaround other than forcing updates directly on each device. And as you suggested this just means that the iTunes app does not attempt to update the apps from the db. So the lack of crash does not equal fix.

Sep 18, 2014 4:01 PM in response to lottytx

My feeling is this is a workaround as it does allow you to get through a clean sync. Whether it is a practical work around depends on the individual situation. Not so bad if you have one device .. horrible if you have 10.

I can tell you having used this work around to run clean syncs / backups on all my devices prior to upgrading to iOS8 .. it did allow all the other features of the sync to run .. I noticed after upgrading devices to iOS8 then again running a sync the lots of new album artwork updated ..

But I do agree having to continually update each device via wifi is UNWORKABLE long term.

hello, I have the same problem (windows7pro).

I found a temporary solution, waiting for Apple to fix the problem.

Hold down shift + ctrl while launching iTunes. It works for me. It should avoid loading the plugins, but I have not loaded plugins. I have not read the whole thread, and I apologize if someone has already suggested it.

Holding down shift + Ctrl did not work for me.

Here's what did (or can work).

1) If you delete all apps from your library (and do not 'keep the file' but put each application file in recycle bin), then

2) Plug in each of your Apple Devices and select "Transfer Purchased Items" to repopulate your library with apps currently on all your devices

3) Download from the App Store any other apps you want residing in your library (that were not currently on a device and 'transferred' in step #2)

4) Download any fresh apps you'd like to purchase or buy from app store

devices should now sync (at least mine did)

curious if others have success with this method, might point to original bug?

Sep 19, 2014 5:12 AM in response to dontpass

AGAIN, we should not have to do any of this. CALL APPLE, the more that call. the sooner they fix it. I am not going through all that crap to fix something they broke. If you want to keep telling people what to do to there pc's go ahead. I am going to quit following this thread, you a-holes beat this to death with the move your files crap. I REFUSE to move all my files, they can take the 6 and shove it. If they do not fix it, I do not need it. Me, I had enough of the apple ********, I put my 2 ipads, 2 iphones and a mac air on craigslist last night, tired of the bs from apple and even worse suggestions by numnuts like you.

⚠ Here is what turned out to be the solution for us: ⚠

The Problem is a bug within iTunes 11.4.x (latest Versions). So you Need to remove everything and install an old iTunes. Then it will work!

  1. - Uninstall all Apple related Software (bonjour, mobile device Services, iTunes etc.)
  2. - Do not reboot
  3. - Download and install iTunes 11.3.0.54 (64-Bit) from Glowfish Hostings Webserver: http://www.glowfish.de/download.php
  4. - Start iTunes normally. In our case it recognized our media library instantly without any loss of data or reconfiguration Problems.
  5. - Let the restore/sync process begin. It will now work.

Hope that helps you guys and Girls out there 🙂

Best Regards

Daniel

I normally wait before upgrading for exactly these reason having been royally shafted a few year back when Apple released a version with a bug that corrupted my whole Outlook folder and caused me 3 days of work to resolve. Had a hissy fit and left Apple for a while before trying again!

I was using ITunes 11.1.x - Iphone 5 updated and synced with no issues, however with my Ipad4 it updated the ipad OK but when I went to sync I had the message that IOS8 needed ITunes 11,2 or later - grrr. Tried to download a version 11.2 but somehow managed to get 11.4 and its related issues Crashed and froze on every attempt to sync even without any app changes .

SO as mentioned earlier by Glowfish, I deleted ITunes and downloaded 11.3 and viola all is well again.

Although apple seem to design amazing physical things the software side lacks considerably when you consider the man hours taken to resolve stuff that really should be sorted.

Don't get me started on the photo side of things!!!!

Hope this helps
