itunes 11.4 crashes when syncing apps to ipad / iphone

hey everyone, maybe the knowledge of the many may help, as I am rather at a loss right now!

after installing itunes 11.4, my trouble started! running 64 bit version on windows 8.1 - and latest iOS on both devices

all windows updates installed, all drivers for whatever is running on this machien are also up to date

connecting either ipad or iphone to computer, when itunes starts to sync, it gets to the point of "syncing apps to iPAD", it tries to add the first app - and crashes for good!

and yep, I went thru all the suggested thingies recommended on here:

iTunes for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8: Fix unexpected quits or launch issues

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1717

windows pops up "itunes has stopped working" ... so I headed over to the Windows Event viewer, and for the moment, itunes crashes, I find these two entries in the log file - tried a search on here, google as well, to no avail:

Hi barbino

You're not the only one having this problem, I'm running the 32bit version of 11.4 on windows 7 and I'm having a very similar problem as you.

It crashes when I sync apps to my iPAD and iPod Touch, but it works ok when synced my iPhone 4S?

My Windows Event looks the sames as yours

I uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled it, no joy. But I have got a sort of work around for the problem. I updated all my iPhone apps on the device before I connected it to iTunes. I tried it with my iPad and iPod Touch both had all their apps updated on the device before syncing to iTunes and no syncing of apps so no crash. It's not a fix, but at least iTunes doesn't crash now. Let hope version 12.0 fixes the problem.

Hope this helps.

Hi Jaypr69, that is very unfortunate... does iTunes believe that the apps are stored locally? If you just copied the folders there is some chance that the library file still points to the NAS. When you right click an app in iTunes and select "info", does it show the local path? Is the NAS still accessible to the laptop and if yes, can you remove the network temporarily of the laptop? If all this fails, maybe it is a solution like mentioned some posts before to copy the mobile applications folder to a local path, delete the apps from iTunes and add the new local folder to iTunes again?

Confirming that shinyplastic's method of downgrading iTunes works for my iPhone 5 running iOS8.

My iPhone got into a muddle as a result of this bug with 11.4. I needed to restore my iPhone from the iCloud backup that had occurred automatically a couple of days prior to my iOS8 update adventure with 11.4.

Like everyone else on this thread, my library is on a NAS. 11.3.0.54 works find with the library on my NAS. I got the installer from filehippo as suggested by shinyplastic.

I was tempted to get an iPhone 6 - Apple has succeeded in delaying my purchase until the 11.4 bug is fixed, as there is no way I'm going to do the library shuffle to get round such a glaring bug.

You don;t need the workaround to restore to your iPhone 6. I had the same problem with Win 7 and iTunes 11.4, but I was able to restore from my iCloud backup. Any App that didm;t come back immediately, I could restore form the Appstore. Only a few App passwords did not get restored. Everything is fine except that I do not have any music on my new iPhone 6.

Thank you everyone for posting and jkreighauser. This worked for me too but the only additional thing that i did was go into the purchased section on the app store on my iphone6, manually download any updates so that were greyed out. Deleted any that were not found in the app store (obsolete) as itunes was still trying to synch them even though i changed the status to "install" which also caused me not to have to synch apps with the NAS. Hope this gets fixed soon!

I found a temp fix to get around itunes crashing when the apps sync - and this came from the need to have my media sync'd across all devices at least, if i couldn't do the same with apps....

1. Launch itunes and make sure to sign out of the itunes store

2. Delete all apps downloaded on itunes, but make sure you select KEEP FILES (for when Apple figures out how to fix this problem permanently so you don't have to re-download the apps all over again)

3. Now sync ur iphone/ipad... media sync's without itunes crashing, tho you'll have to download/update apps directly from ur device itself.

Unfortunately there really isn't a solution for the iPhone 6. I spent a few hours with their 2nd level tech tonight reinstalling all of the Apple products (he indicated that there has been some problems with 11.4 if not all of the apple services like Bonjour were installed on the same date). That made absolutely no difference. There is also no way to use older versions of iTunes. The only fix is not to use iTunes for transferring apps if you use NAS for storage. Really poor timing on Apples part. My iPhone 6 will sit in a box for a week and will await a fix. If no fix by this weekend, back it goes.
