in safari when I click on something, it opens up an ad in new tab

I have an iMac, 2013 model. operating on OS X 10.9.4 and whenever I click on just about everything in safari it opens a new tab with an ad on it.

sometimes the ads are mackeeper or video hosting sites but they are just so annoying! I'm wondering weather I downloaded a virus or something...

how do I get rid of viruses? there seems to be something wrong with my Youtube too, a blank space keeps coming up under the video and every 2 or so seconds it gets bigger so that the comments and video info just keep going down! it also happens on the side where the video suggestions should be!

please help, I'm so frustrated! thanks 🙂

Hey Davis I going through the same problem you once helped some with before about the Mac-keeper popups and the blank youtube video screen before you click on a video. However the links you posted to help with the problem aren't working for me. It says no result when i try and click on that link. Can you Please help?

Dominic23: Your advice again was right on track to use Adwaremedic. I downloaded the software and it got rid of my dangerous popup ads. These ads were popping up on secure sights (Banking and credit cards) that I had signed in to . The adware would create links out of existing words that took you to ads. Thank you very much. I went to macupdate.com and downloaded Awaremedic from that site to be sure every thing was on the up and up. I guess I trust macupdate.com. AdwareMedic is donation ware. Now that I have had a chance to use it, I am going to go back and donate since it worked so well and solved a big problem. Ken
