unknown error [-50]

I've been getting this error quite often lately. I had thought this was an indicator that the disk in the iPod was failing (its a few years old now). However, I am now seeing this with my 4GB Nano which is <1 year old. This seems less likely to be a windows issue as the Nano uses USB and the 5G uses my firewire ports. So now I'm starting to believe that perhaps my iTunes database is somehow corrupt.

Another observation is that in the past I would have cases where my iPod would skip songs, often several at a time. The iTunes suggestion is that the computer disk file was corrupt and suggested ripping the song again. I found that the computer disk file was fine and that it was the data on the iPod that was corrupt. I verified this by simply removing the songs from the iPod list, syncing, re-adding the songs, and syncing again. Often this would resolve the problem.

So is there anyway to re-build or verify the iTunes DB? Any other suggestions as to what is wrong with my setup?

I originally chose an iPod over a Zen player because I could not get the Zen software to sync properly. The situation now is that I can only sync my iPod by doing a restore and downloading all songs again - this is really painful on a 20GB unit. Thanks.<br>

OK...my turn to add to the issue.
For what it is worth here is my story. I have been having all the same problems with my new 30gig. Plug it into my desktop PC and the fun begins with all the errors and non recognition of the ipod etc... I haven't tried the "regedit" yet but I will soon and here is why... On my desktop PC my ipod is a $240.00 paper weight. When I take t to my Compaq LAPTOP it works P E R F E C T L Y ! Music...Photos...Contacts...Calendars, everything! So...it must be something in the operating system of my desktop PC. By the way, I downloaded the same version of iTunes on to both machines. (and apparently I like to use "..." alot)

I tried all of the suggestions below to no avail.

I noticed that when hooked up my IPod, it wanted to give a name "T" which I would change. It kind of looked liked a Windows drive letter so I checked my drives.

My work added a new network drive that gobbled up drives I-N. I disconnected I and now the Ipod is recognized and syncing preoperly.

I had a similar event, My 1GB Shuffle has been working fine since I got it before Christmas, decided to add some additional music today. Plug it in, look find, except Itunes recommend updated firmware to 1.0.2 from 1.0.1. After that it, I waited for it reboot it didn't showup in ITunes. Everytime I tried to access it all I got was the -50 error and read/write error. My Shuffle was configured before for NO HardDrive Space. Got tired of the problem on this computer, switch computers. Reset it for that computer, Restored my Shuffle, then allocated a small amount of disk space for Harddrive Space on the Shuffle, then it Formatted it for Fat32!!!. Then I reset the amount of Hard Drive Space to 0 (Zero) but still leaving it enable for Hard Drive Space. Returned to my other system with all my music, reset the shuffle for that computer. NOW I CAN COPY MY MUSIC!!!!

This is what I think, My two Cents Worth. Is the ITunes has not Could up to IPOD Firmware!!!!.

Box it up. My iPod firmware updated burned out my USB ports on my computer (how the f** that happened I'll never know). Anyways, support was no help. 45 minutes after telling her my problem and her calling "real tech support people", she said "redownload the firmware update". Yeah, won't work so much if your computer can't see the iPod. Forget the iPod, I wish I never got one. Go get a Zune.

OK I fixed the problem, or at least I have a temporary cure for this problem with my new shuffle. I noticed that itunes started and appeared to see the shuffle but the minute I tried copying a song making a change in settings it would give me the -50 error. But it would allow me to update the software on the shuffle? also I noticed under my computer it didnt register a drive for the shuffle, and if it did, it immediatly went away when I started Itunes. What I did was start Itunes.. THEN.. I have to go into device manager, and right click the ipod in the disk drive section and click "scan for hardware changes" then it shows the drive connected and I am able to work the IPOD properly in itunes for awhile. At the time I transferred a couple hundred songs around and after it went idle(or maybe a certain time after) it stopped showing the drive under my computer, so I had to go threw the device manager again to see it. Hope this helps Many of You.
