Changing wireless printing when changing routers???

OK, not sure if I need to do this so asking to be sure. Right now I am connected wirelessly thru my Verizon router, and then Apple Airport Extreme, but think that is slowing down my internet connection but not sure if it really matters. I can switch to just the wireless router thru Verizon without going thru Airport (seems redundant to be using 2 routers) and connect on my laptop. But when I change to just the Verizon router I can no longer print wirelessly to my Canon Pixma 560 printer. Can anyone give me instructions on exactly how to change the printing options? I read that you select the Print & Fax option in systems but no Print & Fax in Maverick but is Printing and Sharing, but don't see anything there to select. Also, can someone advise me steps to connect wirelessly through a 2nd computer on Mavericks (iMac desktop)? I am not tech davy so need step-by-step instructions and easy terminology or I will be lost, but love my Apple products. Opinions on switching to the only-Verizon router option??? If I DO NOT switch and keep it with airport, instructions on setting up the iMac to wirelessly print also, or if changing to Verizon router same options with that router??? I love the help people are willing to share on these posts and appreciate any help I can get.

You had a ping <192.168.1.7> that I saw, but they should be entered as ping 192.168.1.7, but if you are sitting on the iMac and this is the iMac's IP address, it will always work, because you are pinging the iMac fro iMac itself. You can try ping 192.168.1.1 from your iMac, which your VZ 9100EM.

Your iMac should have a 192.168.1.x IP address, but you have a public IP, which is not correct.

For 192.168.1.7, I would have expected "garyschersmbp15.home" to be returned, instead of new-host-3.home. This tells me that the VZ server is not allowing names to be registered with the 9100EM DNS, but if you notice, the "multicast" is allowed for the STBs, and they show with a proper name, not new-host-x.home. See my example of Macmini-i71.home.

Using the public IP that you posted for GSiMac, I get

nslookup 92.242.140.21

Server: 192.168.1.1

Address: 192.168.1.1#53

OK, but this is all greek to me. I just need you to tell me exactly what you need me to do. I know nothing about pings or any of this, just know what I want to be able to do. I realize you are trying to inform me what is going on, but I just can't comprehend what any of this means. Apparently it isn't saying what it needs to, I guess I just need to know exactly what you need me to do to help you decide what I need to do or exactly what to tell tech support if I contact them again. I was like an idiot last night, they kept asking me things and I have no idea what to tell them and they said what I was telling them wasn't correct...

I have had it. I am so stressed out and off to bed. I have spoken to 3 technical support people, 1 expert care and finally Premium technical support, who says I need to go back to technical support. No one has the ability to change these settings and all say they DO NOT have to be changed. They all say it is in the settings for the printer and not the router settings. Are you sure this is the issue? Everyone I have spoken to says it is not the issue. If it is I guess I am screwed because I can't make someone do something they won't do and I have begged, sworn, pleaded. Goodnight.

I understand your frustration. I have an HP C7280, not a Canon Pixma, which also supports USB, and I have the dome Airport as well, Let me test a couple of scenarios, which may take me a day or two, and I can post back here.

If you want to bypass the WiFi mess, as a test, connect the printer to the USB port of the Airport, and under your Snow Leopard OS, go to Airport Utility and share your printer on the network. If that works, test the printer by connecting to both HW8A7 and Airport.

There is also a USB port on the 9100EM. If the Airport+USB does not work, try connecting the printer via USB to 9100EM and then connect to both HW8A7 and Airport and test printing.

Got this issue resolved and completely removed my airport, since it was having problems connecting and getting old. It was really simple to get my printer to print. I only had to go to settings on my printer, select my Verizon router and input the password and now I can print with no problems from both computers while on only the Verizon router and no longer have the airport. Had nothing to do with those settings in my router, just had to set my printer to connect to the right router. Appreciate all the time you took trying to help - so for anyone else reading this and wanting to set up wireless printing on a Canon printer - just go to settings and select the router and input the password and then print away. Thanks again!

I assume you are referring to the 9100 em router I have thru Verizon. I will probably have to at some point, they require the "n" router with the new set-top boxes now so if I ever change I will be required to get that router so they work. At which time I guess I will have to get a new pima printer which is compatible with the "n" router, right? I believe you are saying that my Pixma MP560 won't be compatible with the "n" router (or now they have an even better one with expanded wi-fi options)...

Nov 11, 2014 3:39 PM in response to Gary Schnetter

I meant the old Airport Express which is only 802.11b/g.

In my area, VZ expects the old router sent back to them when they are replaced. If you get a new "n" router from VZ, it may be able to run in b/g/n mode, but you will slow down your faster devices for the sake of the older b/g printer. At which point, a new printer may be a good investment.
