Here is what worked for me: In my search to find which application, other than ITunes, may be connected to my IPod, and after closing everything I had open, except ITunes, I happened to Mouse-Over the icon in the lower right-hand corner of my computer screen, which usually says “Safely Remove Hardware.” This time, I noticed that it also said “and Eject Media.” BINGO! ... I clicked on the icon and up popped a box of options, one of them being “Eject Dave’s IPod from USB.” I selected that option, and it simply ejected my IPod, when everything else I tried had failed.
