iOS 8 Update Failed

Just tried to update my iPad Air to i OS 8 about half an hour after it was released to the public.

After the iPad restart in order for my Mac to install the software, a message came up in iTunes... Says iPad can't be updated at this time.

Basically I can't even use my iPad now because it's stuck in recover mode. Cant restore it either, "iPhone software update server cannot be contacted at this time please try again later".

Really need my iPad for school tomorrow and all my work is in there. I have backups but still...

Extremely disappointed, Apple 😟

Wait till Apple's servers are less busy. It will be much safer and quicker than trying to download when everybody else is.

My IPad got totally screwed up with the update to IOS 8. I don't follow this stuff and had no idea there were warnings of problems. When I got the notification of an update, I just clicked for it to update. Big mistake! I am in my 60's and only use simple aps, no music or games, etc. Still, most of what I did have started working real slow and herky jerky. Some data on my aps simply got changed or disappeared. So, then I tried a few things in an attempt to fix it or go back and now my IPad is pretty much just a "coaster" for me to set drinks on. Really nice of Apple to develop a way to destroy their products! I am just glad this happened now because I was due for a new tablet in a few months anyway. Trouble is, what to buy. It won't be an Apple and Windows 8 is even worse.

Everybody! For the first 24-48 hours after a big software release,IOS or OSX, the servers will be SLAMMED. Even the first week can be sketchy. Just wait a little while if you are not versed in solving the issues that arise from updating. It will go much much smoother in a week or two. Apple is not the problem here, it's us, we are all excited to try out the new FREE!!! software and the servers cannot handle the load.

Don't forget to backup your device before you update!!!

If you are in a rush to try it out, download the update into iTunes and once the download is complete, then install (after you backup of course)

Remember this.... if you are a little "green" when it comes to technology, take 5 minutes and Google what your are about to do BEFORE you do it, then heed the suggestions you find from valid sources, you'll save yourself many, many headaches.

I actually think this is a rather unhelpful post considering the topic is clearly for people who have tried, mostly unsuccessfully, or with significant trouble, to download IOS8.

To suggest the fault lies with the user is ridiculous. The average user is not aware of the issues you mention, and in good faith, downloads (or attempts to) the update not expecting to the range of issues that many have rendered their devices as completely unusable for days. Mine is now at 36 hours and counting.

Thanks for your wise words but they are too late and the majority of people on this thread are looking for support to problems not "just wait to download it"....the damage is done. Hindsight is 20/20. Of course most people would have waited if we'd had any idea of the range of serious issues this update would cause.

Any practical solutions you can offer? No...then thanks for saying the on line equivalent of "I told you so".

Hi...guess what? I've had a small amount of success and think you should continue to try BECAUSE I expect mine will be fixed soon.

You've got to try to get it into the DFU mode. I've persisted and eventually after 100 times or so it popped up and kinda shocked me. Here's what you do - make sure you do count out the seconds etc. I've added in my comments in [bold] to assist you. Good luck.

How to put your iPhone or iPad into DFU mode

  1. Plug your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad into your Mac or Windows PC and make sure iTunes is running.
  2. Hold down both the Sleep Button (on top of your device) and the Home Button (on the front underneath the screen).
  3. Keep them both held down from about 10 seconds. (If you see the Apple logo, you've held them too long and will need to start again.) [COUNT AND STOP AT 10 SECONDS - LET GO OF THE SLEEP BUTTON ON TOP HERE BUT KEEP HOLDING HOME BOTTOM]
  4. Let go of the Sleep Button but keep holding the Home Button for about 5 seconds [MAKE SURE YOU COUNT TO 5 THEN LET THE HOME BUTTON GO]. (If you see the "Plus into iTunes" screen than you held it too long and will need to start again - [i DIDN'T SEE THIS AND HAD TO DO IT TWICE - IT ALL WORKED ON THE 2ND GO.)
  5. If the screen stays black, that's it! Your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad should now be in DFU mode. [WAIT....BECAUSE IT WILL IN A SECOND OR TWO SHOW UP ON YOUR ITUNES]

At this point iTunes will show you an alert saying it's detected your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad and it needsUser uploaded file to be restored. [LET IT RESTORE - HOPING YOU BACKED UP TO THE ICLOUD BEFORE LIKE I DID - IT'LL TAKE A WHILE AND WILLL SHOW THE TIME ON ITUNES...ONCE DONE I EXPECT I WILL BE ABLE TO RESTORE FROM MY IPAD THE BACKED UP VERSION ON ICLOUD].

If you're curious as to the difference between DFU mode and and Recovery Mode, Ally Kazmucha explains it this way:

Recovery mode will implement iBoot (basically a portion of the bootloader than runs an integrity check) which will not allow you to downgrade your device. DFU mode will still talk to iTunes but it bypasses iBoot which will then allow you to downgrade firmware.

hi thanks ive tried to enter the dfu mode, but first time i did that i cannot open my phone with just the power button so i opened it with both the power and home button as i watched it in youtube, that if you cannot open phone in dfu mode with just power button, open in woth both buttons. but when i did that, it just got back to the recovery mode loop! and i needed to try and try to enter the dfu mode again, luckily i did and now i left it with the black screen (dfu mode) because im too afraid that if i will open it again by both buttons, it will just get back to that recovery mode loop! pls help me again. thanks 😟 pls also help us anyone?

I just tried to update my brothers iPad 2 and it got up to the stage where it says 'Slide to upgrade' (i think) and i slid it and did two digits of his passcode before it crashed and turned off.

It wouldn't turn on no matter what i did (connect it to iTunes, click the power button), then i remembered i can restart the iPad by holding down the power button for 10 seconds, without letting go hold down the home button (+the power button) for 10 more seconds then let go of the power button and just hold the home button down. All fixed 🙂

Don't know where to put in my problem. So posting it in here. Please help.

I download the upgrade iOS 8.0 in my iPad Mini over Wi-Fi. 906 MB downloaded, and then it said preparing update. Then came the popup install the update, I did that too. My iPad restarted to install the upgrade and when it came online its still showing iOS 7.1.2 and asking to upgrade again.

I'm a bit confused. Firstly where my downloaded upgrade (906 MB) went, as the space is deducted from my allotted 13.4 GB. Secondly, its asking to upgrade again, can't it detect the downloaded upgrade.

Please help asap. As i'm thinking to go off with the upgrade and reset the iPad again.

Thanks

RecBoot is not working for me. I tried several times and it just keeps coming up with the error "iTunes has detected an iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTunes." after I click "Exit Recovery". Am I doing something wrong or do I need to try something else?

My daughter decided to update her school issued iPad2 to ios8 and it came up with the iTunes logo. We tried to connect it to my MacBook Pro with iTunes but it doesn't recognize the device and only gives us the option to restore it. Unfortunately, when they issued these devices, they offered them a short class to show them how to use it but apparently backing up to iCloud (or backing up period) wasn't covered. All of her school work is on it and will be lost, so I am desperately trying to do something to prevent her from losing all of her work. 😟

We have got the same problem. Updating a iPad 2 to iOS 8 and its stuck in recovery mode.

None of the tools works for us. Tried, Recboot, ReiBoot, TinyUmbrella, "Wondershare Dr.Fone for iOS" and none works.

This is definitely an Apple bug that they are not admitting. At least not yet.

We went to Apple store and the GENIUS told us we have to restore to factory setting thus loosing all data & media that is not back up.

Funny enough he told us that its our responsibility to back up although they screwed up the update.

When I pushed the GENIUS to just take it out of this mode he told me that there is nothing we can do because everything has been deleted from the iPad already !!!! Then he suggested us to go to a data recovery (and he give the address in Mill Valley) to recover the data.

Hello, if there are nothing on the iPad how could a data recovery help ?!!!!!

Frustrated, going back to Apple store to talk to someone more senior. I think they should take responsibility for the mess and not just brush it away.
